The NBA free agency period hasn’t even started yet. Technically, teams can’t make their actual signings official until today, which means as of now – though they’re still not 100% official – we have three new Sixers.

Jerryd Bayless

The first signing was Jerryd Bayless, who is 27, is considered older even though he’s only three days my (and Jeremy Lin’s) senior. Bayless seems just thrilled to be here:

Here’s some basic stuff you need to know:

  • What’d he shoot from 3 last year?
    • 43.7% on 4.4 attempts per game.
    • It’s kinda his thing. Here’s heat map from last season:
      • bayless heat map
  • Has he ever used the word “booty” in a tweet?
  • Does he have any cool nicknames?
    • No.

Bayless will likely fill in a combo guard role, he could play starter’s minutes, and he’ll likely be relied upon to hit a good number of threes off the pass from Ben Simmons.

Gerald Henderson

Even older is the Sixers’ next signing, Episcopal Academy’s Gerald Henderson. A former lottery pick in 2009, Henderson has spent time with the two Charlotte teams and the Portland Trailblazers. In Portland last year, he posted 15.7 points per 36 minutes (his career average) while playing a key bench role. Again, he may be asked to start here.

The need to knows:

  • How do his advanced numbers look?
    • His 2.0 Win Shares (an estimated number of wins said player added for his team) ranked 62nd among qualified guards (right below Dion Waiters’ 2.1) last year
    • His PER, an offensive stat meant to boil down all of a player’s contributions into one number (the average is 15), of 12.9 was below average but only 0.1 under Patrick Beverly
    • His VORP (Value over Replacement Player, basically how good is he vs. “the kind of player that could be signed as a free agent from a minor league”) was 10th worst among qualified guards, but still better than Nik Stauskas
  • Has he ever tweeted the word “booty”?
    • Once:
      • henderson
  • Does he have any cool nicknames?
    • Again, no.

Sergio Rodriguez

Finally, the Sixers signed Sergio Rodriguez out of left field Real Madrid. Rodriguez had also played for the Portland Trailblazers (and Kings and Knicks) from 2006 to 2010, averaging 71 games a year for four seasons. The signing expands the Sixers’ international interests as well, and they might as well just change their logo to this:

Here’s what you want to know:

  • How’s he been in Spain over the past three seasons?
    • He’s averaged 18.6 points per 36 minutes
    • He’s shot 41.2% from three on 4 attempts per game
    • He was the 2013-14 MVP
  • Has he ever used the word “booty” in a tweet?
  • Does he have any cool nicknames?
    • Oh hell yeah.
      • Spanish Chocolate
      • El Chacho
        • He even has a logo
        • chacho
      • Mojo Picón
      • El Genio de San Cristobal de la Laguna

It may not have been the splash many were expecting, but Bryan Colangelo made three safe, short-term, and cheap signings that should help the team this year at the very least. He got a shooter, a local product, and a dude who looks like Spencer Hawes stole James Harden’s beard while he was sleeping. That checks all my boxes.
