Last years’ annual NBA GM survey didn’t quite nail the Rookie of the Year prediction. 44.8% of GMs last year thought Jahlil Okafor would win the trophy – link would go here but the post is still in drafts, KYLE. They also voted Dario Saric as the best European player not in the NBA, so they were at least right about one thing.

This year, 13.3% of GMs still voted for Ben Simmons to win ROTY, even though he’ll miss a solid chunk of the season. Joel Embiid got 10%. But one vote was a landslide:

> Which rookie will be the best player in five years?
1. Ben Simmons, Philadelphia – 70.0%
2. Kris Dunn, Minnesota – 20.0%
3. Brandon Ingram, L.A. Lakers – 6.7%
4. Joel Embiid, Philadelphia – 3.3%
Last year: Karl-Anthony Towns – 62.1%

That means of the 30 GMs, 21 voted that Ben Simmons would be the best player from this class in five years. One person voted for Joel Embiid.

T.J. McConnell received a single vote in response to “Which active player will make the best head coach someday,” which makes sense because he already looks like he’s supposed to model an ill-fitting suit in a Lands’ End catalog. Additionally, Ben Simmons got one “best passer” vote, and Elton Brand got a vote for “wait, he’s still one a team?” One of those is a lie.
