Jack McCaffery Hated Your Boos

There’s not much going on today, so let’s pull Jack McCaffery into the light.
For those of you who don’t know, McCaffery writes for the Delco Times and hates everything you like. Today, he weighed in on what humanity has agreed was an excellent atmosphere at the NFL Draft, particularly the fun series of boos cast at Roger Goodell and Drew Pearson. Allow Jack to step up on his soapbox:
So with the commissioner at the podium begging them to heckle, and with him later encouraging former Dallas receiver Drew Pearson to remind them that the Cowboys, not the Eagles, have been Super Bowl champions, the show was on. Sadly, Eagles fans complied. They booed Roger Goodell every time he appeared, booed every mention of the word Dallas, booed every pick by both New York teams. They didn’t even mix in a good hiss.
Booing has had a long history in Philadelphia. In many ways, it was a proud history. For generations, it was an exhibition not just of passion, but of knowledge. When Philadelphia fans booed, it was for a reason. It was because Ron Jaworski too seldom avoided a sack, or because John Felske was inept, or because they had a hunch that someday Donovan McNabb would have stomach issues late in a Super Bowl. They booed overpaid, under-performing slobs like Jon Papelbon, and they booed superstars, like Mike Schmidt, whenever a slump lasted too long.
They knew when to boo. They didn’t do it on demand so that TV viewers 11 states away could stare at them and giggle, as if watching a bad reality show.
Um, what?
I know Jack’s ilk has the reflex to jump all over everything that doesn’t adhere to some old-timey notion of WHAT MADE SPORTS GREAT, but this is some next-level sour-pussery. In fact, I can’t think of anything less consequential, even for sports media dolts, than the subject of fans giving a good-natured boo at a rival during a sporting event whose existence is effectively meaningless. Feigning outrage upon it is akin to getting upset at the Hamburglar because he robbed some kid of his lunch… it has no bearing in the real world. I’m genuinely blown away by how much of a dipshit someone can be (McCaffery, not the Hamburglar) without realizing it.
