The roundup:

FUN walk-off win by Phillies yesterday, even though they did everything they could to lose it with four consecutive outs – including a strike out, swinging bunt and fly out – with the game-winning run in scoring position in the ninth and tenth innings.

Jayson Werth, however, continued to kill the Phillies, hitting two home runs, one of which came with this bat flip…

… and this Max Scherzer mock boo:

Werth now has 22 home runs and 76 RBIs in 102 career games against the Phillies. Butthurt propels.

This Penn State hazing story is insane:

Penn State sophomore Tim Piazza spent his final hours dragging his bruised and bloodied body across a beer-soaked fraternity house floor, stumbling down stairs into iron railings, and lying drunk and unconscious as head injuries and internal bleeding slowly sapped his life away. All the while, fraternity brothers did little to help him.

I was in a frat, so I’ve been on both ends of the hazing. For us, the pledging process was less about getting people shitfaced and more about having someone prove their worth and basically do the things brothers didn’t want to do– running rides to off-campus parties, cleaning up, doing favors. It’s meant to be a bonding experience. What it should not be about is how far you can push the limits of human body. Sure, the occasional embarrassing stunt or drinking game is one thing, but forcing people to drink beyond their capacity is one of the most fucked up things anyone, college student or otherwise, can do. These kids who watched that guy die are douchebags, not frat brothers.

I don’t get why pro athletes wouldn’t put pictures of themselves on the field on these sites.

ESPN book author Jim Miller on the layoffs:

“There are two headlines for me: It turns out they way overreacted to FS1 getting into cable sports,” Miller said. “It caused them to make a lot of talent deals at prices they would have not have done. I think it also made them much more ready to spend big dollars, particularly with the NBA to make sure other people did not have it. I think they paid way too much and it’s not like we are just saying it now. As a result, things have not flowed particularly coherently from that point. One of the ways to gauge that is to look at some of these names. Some of these people have long-term deals. These are not buyouts. What they are saying to these people is: Look, we are going to sideline you. You will not have to work and we will keep paying you. But if you go get a job, we will release you but we will not pay you for the rest of the contract. So they are betting and hoping that these people will get other jobs.

“As much as they are trying to push the words versatility and value, I think in some ways they have cut off their nose to spite their face,” Miller continued. “Because they are really taking important people who were able to give the audience and people on the web real detailed and deep background on certain sports. Andy Katz on college basketball, Jayson Stark on baseball, and the list goes on and on and on. So as a result, you start to think that was a level of expertise the network had that I think people were brought to and attracted to and now they are not going to have that.”

The Flyers fired him in favor of Craig Berube.

Torry Smith is a good dude:

According to BARCS Animal Shelter in Baltimore, Smith and his wife Chanel paid the adoption fees for cats and dogs — 46 total — at an adoption event on Saturday. They also made an “extra donation” on top of the fees.

Pro Football Focus calls the Eagles the most improved team in the NFC East:

Yeah, but the Giants are the best.

Insane NBA agent stories.

Kyle Lowry to the Sixers? I’ll have some more thoughts on this later.

Shot (David Murphy):

But none of that makes the Eagles’ three-to-five year outlook on the offensive line any less problematic. Last year showed us just how disruptive the unexpected loss of one of the tackles can be. The culprit was a suspension sustained by the 26-year-old right tackle rather than an injury sustained by the 34-year-old left tackle, but it remains to be seen how long Jason Peters can hold his block against Father Time. If Peters can repeat his 2016 and Johnson can avoid ingesting any banned substances, the Eagles’ O-Line looks solid for 2017. But the outlook for 2018 and beyond is a bit murkier.

Chaser:

I enjoy Kevin Durant much more as the heel.

Mets dong.

Riley Cooper, can’t get over the fence.

They both made it.
