Report: Markelle Fultz May Have a High Ankle Sprain
Philadelphia 76ers rookie Markelle Fultz suffered a high ankle sprain in the team’s summer league game against the Golden State Warriors on Saturday night in Las Vegas, a source told ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne.
Fultz was helped off the court after rolling his left ankle. Sixers president of basketball operations Bryan Colangelo told Shelburne that Fultz was diagnosed with a sprained ankle.
I’m not sure how much validity there is to this as ESPN is the only place reporting a “high ankle sprain” (then again, I imagine Sixers beat writers are still sleeping), but if true… here we go again down the well worn path of escalating injuries. As any sports fan knows, high ankle sprains are much worse than traditional ankle sprains and affect the ligaments just above the ankle. These injuries usually come as a result of a twisting of the ankle (which was not the case with Fultz) and have pain that can radiate up to the knee. Estimates for return vary, but are generally in the 6-7 week range. Gulp.
