I figured that after the Bryan Colangelo scandal was settled that his father Jerry would just move on to the next thing without any real fanfare or hullabaloo.

The elder Colangelo is under contract until the end of the year as a special adviser to the Sixers, a role that means he just sort of gives advice and offers his educated basketball opinion when needed. He doesn’t have any real decision-making power, nor would his continued relationship with the team affect any sort of player-personnel moves at all. The Sixers could simply wait for his contract to expire, say “thanks for everything,” and move on.

Colangelo basically corroborated that idea in a recent article in the Washington Post. National NBA writer Tim Bontemps spoke with Jerry at the Team USA minicamp in Las Vegas, and he had this to say about his current status with your team, your town:

“I haven’t made any public comments about what transpired,” Jerry Colangelo said. “I don’t think it would be appropriate. It’s a very difficult summer for (Bryan Colangelo), and his family.”

In discussing the situation, Colangelo termed his own tenure in Philadelphia — with which he served as a special adviser — as over, before clarifying that it is “over at the end of the year.”

A league source confirmed that account. While Colangelo is under contract through the end of this calendar year, and the 76ers will be honoring that contract, it won’t be renewed. It is an awkward ending to what was one of the stranger stories in recent NBA memory.

That’s about it. Seems very straightforward to me.

Josh Harris didn’t have much to say about Jerry during the post-Bryan press conference in June, but I logged these quotes from the availability:

There were two questions about Jerry Colangelo. Mike Sielski of the Inquirer asked if he held any influence during the investigation.

“Jerry was not involved with the process in any way. I’m aware of the press report, which is not true. We did give Jerry a heads up at the end of the process, this morning, just before seeing you all, but Jerry was respectful of the process we had to go through.”

Later, Harris was asked if the elder Colangelo would continue in his “special advisor to managing general partner” role:

“So that’s not today’s issue. I certainly appreciated Jerry’s counsel. His deal goes through the end of the year. We’re going to be talking about that and it’s not today’s issue. We’ve enjoyed having Jerry and this is unfortunate, but my respect for him is certainly not colored by this unfortunate situation. “

Harris didn’t have much to say back then, but denied the report that Jerry Colangelo was interfering with the investigation surrounding his son. Either way, that’s done and dusted. This is now entering nothingburger territory.

What the Sixers need is a general manager and a rebuilt Markelle Fultz. Those are priorities 1 and 2, or maybe 1a and 1b. Or maybe 1a and 1a.

Time’s yours.
