The Eagles Will Not Franchise Tag Nick Foles

Howie Roseman just spoke to reporters at the NFL Combine and revealed that Nick Foles won’t be tagged:
Howie Roseman just announced that they have decided to allow Nick Foles to become a free agent. No franchise tag.

This was always likely to happen, considering that tagging and trading him would result in the other team taking on $25 million dollars of salary. The market apparently was not there.
Now, potential bidders can offer Nick at a lower price while the Eagles are likely to get a compensatory 2020 3rd round draft pick for losing Foles in free agency.
Other notes from Howie’s availability today, after the jump:
- on Carson Wentz, no issues with any concerns raised in the Philly Voice story, says players have wanted to come here in free agency to play with Carson
- team has a lot of confidence in Nate Sudfeld as a backup quarterback
- they will be aggressive in free agency and not be averse to risk-taking
- excited to bring back Rodney McLeod, a guy who fits what they want to do
- on the idea of drafting running back in the first round, Roseman said there were “different ways to skin a cat.”
- new VP of Football Operations Andrew Berry is a “very talented person at his craft and can help in every area”
Doug Pederson then took the podium:
- Nate Sudfeld has earned the opportunity to compete for the backup QB spot. “It’s a matter of him embracing that and moving forward with it.”
- He doesn’t put a lot of “weight” or “stock” in the Philly Voice article about Carson Wentz.
- On Carson, he pointed out that he played with Brett Favre and Dan Marino, guys who were not “buddy buddy” with everybody. “We’re not in a feel-good business.”
- Didn’t rule out bringing back Jason Peters and likened his situation to that of Darren Spoles’
- RE: coaching changes, diplomatic answer, not much to read into
- he loves Nelson Agholor and admitted that the addition of Golden Tate affected his production
