Let’s check in on New York’s offseason.

So far they have:

  • committed to 38-year-old Eli Manning for another year ($23 million cap hit)
  • allowed Pro Bowl safety Landon Collins to walk

I can understand the latter. Collins isn’t the world’s best pass defender, so that’s why they decided to move on.

Now they’re trading Olivier Vernon to the Browns for right guard Kevin Zeitler:

This is a good move for the Giants. That offensive line needed a lot of help, and with Vernon hitting the cap at $19.5 million this year, that money is now shifted to the Browns, who can afford to take on bigger contracts while Baker Mayfield remains on his rookie deal.

Zeitler is an upgrade over Jamon Brown. Pro Football Focus rates him as a top-10 guard, if you believe in PFF’s numbers. Throw Zeitler into the mix with Will Hernandez and Nate Solder, and that offensive line is looking better than it did recent years.

Of course, the pass rush isn’t great. The Giants finished with only 30 sacks last year, which was 2nd worst in the NFL. Vernon had four tackles and a sack in two games against the Eagles in 2018. He had seven tackles and two sacks vs. the Birds during the 2017 Super Bowl winning season.

Not sure about you, but I can’t wait to see what the Giants do next.
