That didn’t take long.

Less than two weeks after firing Phil Martelli, St. Joe’s named Philadelphia 76ers assistant Billy Lange their new head coach, confirmed via press release a short time ago.

The Inquirer’s Mike Jensen was all over this story, so his tweet gets the nod:

Lange will begin his gig immediately, which means he will not be with the Sixers through the playoffs. He is currently handling the defensive duties vacated by Lloyd Pierce, who took Atlanta’s head coaching job after last season.

We’ll ask Brett Brown what he plans to do about the open coaching spot when he speaks pregame tonight around 5:15. He could have advisor Jim O’Brien return to the bench, or maybe bring Blue Coats head coach Connor Johnson in. Another option would be Kendall Jenner.

Edit: Here’s a statement from Brett –

STATEMENT ON BEHALF OF 76ERS HEAD COACH BRETT BROWN:

The pairing of Billy Lange as the head coach of the St. Joe’s basketball program is an incredibly natural fit.

As a Philly native, Billy’s basketball experiences as a head coach at Navy, an assistant at Villanova and six NBA seasons on our bench, provides a great base to develop, recruit and stamp his vision on a storied basketball program.

I am proud of his appointment and he and his family will be missed as friends and Billy in a professional capacity, very much.

He has been with me from day one and to see where he started and now where he has ended up, is a fantastic human and basketball story. We will be following him closely. Go Hawks.
