I forgot to mention this in the observations post this morning, but JJ Redick set a single-season Sixers record when he hit his 227th three-pointer last night.

He’s shooting 39.2% this year, down from the 42% he shot last year, but a record number of attempts helped him eclipse the 226 three-pointers Kyle Korver hit during the 2004-2005 season.

I was interested in seeing who rounds out the top ten in both categories, so here’s what Basketball Reference has to say:

Kind of crazy that Robert Covington had three straight seasons that put him into the Sixers top ten.

Here’s an edit to the chart that shows where each guy performed relative to their total attempts, which just helps us see how efficient each guy was, after the jump:

Some guys performed well relative to their total attempts and some didn’t. If you take that top ten on the left and add their three-point shooting percentages, it looks like this:

  1. Redick: 231 makes / 589 attempts = 39.2%
  2. Korver: 226 makes / 558 attempts =  40.5%
  3. Covington: 203 makes / 550 attempts = 36.9%
  4. Barros: 197 makes / 425 attempts = 46.4%
  5. Redick: 193 makes / 460 attempts = 41.9%
  6. Korver: 184 makes / 438 attempts = 42.0%
  7. Canaan: 176 makes / 485 attempts = 36.3%
  8. Covington: 170 makes / 482 attempts = 35.3%
  9. Covington: 167 makes / 446 attempts = 37.4%
  10. Saric: 157 makes / 399 attempts = 39.3%

Covington is less a model of efficiency than the other guys on the list. Canaan’s percentage is pretty poor, while Korver and Redick both had better shooting seasons when they did not set their single season records.

In fact, Dana Barros had such an efficient season back in 1994-1995, that he finished top-ten in single-season three-pointers while not even putting up a top-ten amount of attempts.

Check this out:

Barros hit 197 of 425 three point attempts that season, which is crazy.

If you’re wondering about that 2006-2007 Korver campaign, he only took 307 three-point attempts that year. So his best efficiency season did not correspond to his best raw total season.

Some great numbers up there, and now you have a bit of context.
