The Phillies fell sort of flat this weekend when they needed to not be flat.

With the NL East leading Atlanta Braves in town, the Phils gave up 24 runs in the first two games alone, both losses, before taking the final game of the series on Sunday.

Jake Arrieta was sharp early in Friday’s game before allowing four runs in the top of the fifth, ending his night. Cole Irvin came next and gave up four the following inning in a 9-2 loss.

Saturday was a retro night of sorts, with the Braves and Phillies wearing uniforms from 1979. The Phils brought back their all-burgundy set they wore for one game that year and never again. They lost that game big, and did so again 40 years later in a 15-7 blowout. Atlanta recorded four runs in the second and seven in the third.

Side note: With the Braves and Phils wearing throwbacks on Saturday (and the Marlins wearing 90s throwbacks as well), I really think every league should mandate a throwback/vintage jersey in their on-field collection. I love the baby blues the Phils wear on Thursdays as well (St. Louis has some good ones as well).

Back to baseball, where the Phillies did salvage the series with a 9-4 win Sunday afternoon thanks in large part to a grand slam home run by J.T. Realmuto and a late two-run shot by Rhys Hoskins.

The Phils are 6.5 games back of first place, one more game than they started on Friday. It could have been 8.5 if not for the win Sunday. The Trade Deadline is Wednesday and we’ll wait and see what the team does before then. They made one small move acquiring Jose Pirela from the Padres, who they sent down to Lehigh Valley.

The team plays again Tuesday when they host the Giants.

The Roundup:

The Eagles continue Training Camp at NovaCare after a day off on Sunday. Did you also know the team signed Nnamdi Asomugha eight years ago today? Dark times.

The biggest storyline is the injury to Cre’Von LeBlanc. He’ll be out for the next several weeks with a foot sprain. So enter veteran corner Orlando Scandrick.

One guy that’s generating a lot of buzz is Josh Sweat, who some are expecting big things from this season.

Other camp nuggets: Carson Wentz made a young fan’s day on Friday, and Rita’s has a new Eagles-themed water ice flavor.

Mike Scott dominated the Sixers scene this weekend racing a Phillies security guard and crashing a wedding. I think he’s here to stay.

If for some reason you don’t like Mike Scott and/or his hive, Kevin wrote down some thoughts on the new-look roster with Trey Burke now part of the fold.

The Union got crushed by the Montreal Impact 4-0 on Saturday. That’s a shame. They’re at D.C. United on Sunday.

FanDuel Sportsbook officially launched in Pennsylvania this morning. Good news for you betters.
