I feel bad for Roman Quinn.

I just do. The guy cannot stay on the field. He’s headed back to the IL – again – this time with what the team is calling a right groin strain. Here’s the official business:

Quinn, who was hitting .368 with a 1.139 OPS in August, left last night’s game in the ninth inning after he tweaked his groin attempting to beat out a throw to first base.

I asked manager Gabe Kapler yesterday about Quinn’s recent improved play.

“I think that success has led to a little bit of confidence and swagger, and that has led to allow his athletic ability to come out,” Kapler said. “He has been more accurate with the barrel recently, has taken more balls, has been more selective in the strike zone.”

Kapler also talked about the team’s conservative approach with Quinn, hoping that frequent rest would help keep him healthy:

He’s so dynamic, he’s so game-changing that when he’s where he needs to be it’s really hard not to have him in the lineup. For me, it requires a lot of discipline to not have him be in the lineup knowing that we have to try to figure out ways to keep him healthy as well. One of things we’ve learned about Roman is we can’t just run him out there every day and just pencil him into the lineup. We’ve gotta constantly be talking to him. We have to probably be more disciplined getting him days off than other guys.

Unfortunately, that approach didn’t work.

Newly-acquired reliever Jared Hughes, who the Phillies claimed off waivers from Cincinnati, will take Quinn’s spot on the 25-man roster. It’s expected that Adam Haseley will see increased playing time in center field. He will start there tonight.

Haseley is batting .278 with a .667 OPS in 11 games this month.
