Let’s check in on former Temple football coaches:

  • Geoff Collins: 1-3 at Georgia Tech with losses to The Citadel and the Owl team he just left
  • Manny Diaz: 2-2 at Miami with wins over powerhouse Bethune-Cookman and Central Michigan
  • Steve Addazio: 3-2 at Boston College with a disgusting 24-point home loss to Kansas on the resume
  • Al Golden: linebacker coach for the Detroit Lions
  • Matt Rhule: 4-0 at Baylor and coming off a win against Iowa State

It’s been one hell of a turnaround for Rhule in Waco, and the unbeaten start earned him a contract extension.

Via Mark Schlabach at ESPN:

Baylor officials have reached a contract extension with third-year football coach Matt Rhule, which could take him through the 2027 season, the university announced Sunday.

…..

Rhule inherited a program that was plagued by accusations of sexual misconduct by players and the mishandling of other off-field issues, which led to the firing of former coach Art Briles and resignation of other university officials in 2016.

The Bears went 1-11 in Rhule’s first season in 2017 and 7-6 in 2018, including a 45-38 victory over Vanderbilt in the Academy Sports + Outdoors Texas Bowl. It was the largest increase in wins by a Power 5 program last season.

Not sure how many casual sports fans realize how much of a disaster Baylor was three years ago. A lot of coaches would not have touched that job with a ten foot pole because of the residual toxicity and scholarship situation. But there was also a lot of upside for anybody who wanted to put in the time and effort and struggle through a couple of years to right the ship. Texas high school recruiting is FERTILE. The program had success in the not-so-distant past and the Big 12 doesn’t exactly have anybody outside of Oklahoma who is lighting the world on fire right now.

So good for Matt Rhule. Great guy, great coach, nice to see him doing well down there.
