Wrote about the Derek Barnett sequence this morning, the unnecessary low and cheap hit he put on an offensive lineman during Nate Gerry’s pick-six in the first quarter.

Doug Pederson was asked about that play and about Barnett in general, the idea of whether his third-year defensive end might be developing a reputation as a dirty player after stringing together a couple of bad unnecessary roughness penalties this year.

Doug, speaking on Monday:

Derek and I have talked. We talked during the week. We talked during the game yesterday about it. Listen, it’s an emotional game and sometimes things escalate during the game. Having been out there and being around those guys, obviously you never want to be labeled as one of those types of athletes, but he’s aggressive, he plays hard, plays to the whistle. Not gonna take that away from him obviously, but we’ve just gotta be smarter and it starts with me communicating that with the team and being a more disciplined football team that way.

What I saw on the coach’s tape was that he was in front of the offensive lineman. They collided and then he went low when it was away from – he didn’t need to do it. It was away from the play. We talked about that as soon as he came off the field. He understood that, but it was just a mistake that he didn’t need to make.

According to Football Database, Barnett came into week five tied for the third-most individual penalties in the NFL, with six. That included two offsides and three unnecessary roughness flags totaling 55 yards against his team.

Recently, he was also fined $28,000 for the hit that knocked Jamaal Williams out of the Green Bay game.

Here’s another look at the Jets hit, which you can see in the clip around the 15 second mark:
