With a doubleheader scheduled in South Philadelphia this afternoon and evening, let’s take a look at both games in our Phillies vs. Yankees betting preview.

Following a week-long layoff, the Phillies were predictably stifled by Gerrit Cole and the Yankees on Monday night.

Undoubtedly, the cards were stacked against the Phillies in that one. Today, however, they are back at home and send their top two pitchers to the hill in Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola. They’ll be opposed by former Phillie J.A. Happ and Jordan Montgomery.

Can the Phillies shake off the rust and a sleepy 1-3 start to cool off the red-hot Yankees? Let’s find out in our Phillies vs. Yankees betting preview with odds, picks, and predictions.

Phillies vs. Yankees Odds

Here are the current Phillies vs. Yankees odds (as of 12 p.m. Wednesday) for both games, courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook:

Game One Odds

Teams Runline Moneyline Total
Phillies +1.5 (-190) +120 Over 8 (-113)
Yankees -1.5 (+160) -139 Under 8 (-108)

Game Two Odds

Teams Runline Moneyline Total
Yankees -1.5 (+100) -154 O9.5 -125
Phillies +1.5 (-118) +130 U 9.5 +105

The Yankees are certainly baseball’s hottest team, and they may be baseball’s best team. With that said, I’m still a little bit surprised they are favored in both contests. However, there are a few things to note here:

  • The Phillies haven’t won a game started by Aaron Nola in 351 days. Dating back to last season, they have lost his last eight starts.
  • The Yankees played in seven doubleheaders last season. They were a combined 13-1 in those games.
  • New York is 12-3 in J.A. Happ’s regular season starts away from Yankees Stadium since the start of the 2019 season.

Phillies vs. Yankees Betting Preview

Now let’s take a closer look at this matchup with our Phillies vs. Yankees betting preview.

Game One

For a variety of reasons, the Phillies haven’t been able to get into a rhythm so far this season. COVID-19 concerns and weather have combined to significantly disrupt the Phillies’ schedule. However, at 1-3, they don’t have much more time for excuses if they’re going to factor in the National League East discussion this season.

Looking to snap a two-game skid and give the Phillies their first win in 10 days, Zack Wheeler will try to replicate his stellar first outing as a Phillie in which he went seven innings while allowing just one earned run.

In two starts against the Yankees last season, Wheeler experienced mixed results. Last June, he surrendered 10 hits and five earned runs in just 4.2 IP during a 12-5 loss. However, he rebounded the following month by yielding just two earned runs in 6.1 IP.

He’ll be opposed by J.A. Happ, who posted a 4.91 ERA over 30 starts with the Yankees a season ago. In his lone start this season, Happ was tagged for four earned runs (two homers) in just four innings of work against the Orioles in an eventual 8-6 win.

Despite Happ’s rather pedestrian road ERA that’s pushing nearly 5.00 dating back to the start of last season, the Yankees have won 80% of his starts.

Game Two

There’s no disputing that Aaron Nola is a good pitcher, but the Phillies can’t seem to win his starts. They finished 0-7 in his starts down the stretch a season ago and that baffling trend continued in their Opening Day loss to the Marlins.

In fact, since the start of last season, the Phillies are just 10-10 in Nola’s starts at Citizens Bank Park. Today marks the first time in that stretch where the Phillies weren’t the favorite (at least not at the time of this post). Since 2019, the Phillies are 3-2 in Nola’s starts as an underdog. All of those games, however, came on the road.

Nola will be opposed by Jordan Montgomery, who was sharp against the Red Sox in his lone outing this season. He lasted 5.2 innings in that start, allowing just one earned run while striking out four.

Phillies vs. Yankees Prediction

It’s time to make a Phillies vs. Yankees prediction.

We don’t have lineups for today’s games at post time, but here’s what we know:

  • The Phillies need to get some production from the top of their order. Andrew McCutchen, who is a candidate to sit one of today’s games, is hitting just .071 through four contests. Meanwhile, Rhys Hoskins is hitting just .167.
  • Scott Kingery has also gotten off to a sluggish start, hitting just .071.
  • The Phillies are just 5 for 28 (.179) with runners in scoring position this season.

Here’s a prediction – I think they’re luck changes on these fronts. Two plays for game one:

  • I’m going to take Hoskins to homer in game one with a +505 payout at DraftKings Sportsbook.
  • I’m also going to take the Phillies to be the first team to score three runs at -113 at DraftKings Sportsbook.

Phillies vs. Yankees Picks

Ultimately, the right side of a doubleheader always feels like a split. But I like the Wheeler matchup in the early game, and, at some point, the Phillies have to win an Aaron Nola start. So in addition to the prop plays above, I’m going to take a shot at +305 odds on the Phillies to win both sides of the doubleheader with DraftKings.

Be bold, I guess?
