Albert Breer is an NFL Insider who does the MMQB column over at Sports Illustrated.

He went on Colin Cowherd’s show Monday and the topic of Carson Wentz came up, because of course it did, and Breer thinks that Chicago is in the driver’s seat, but doesn’t think Da Bears are Carson’s preference right now.

Here’s the full transcript of the question and answer:

Cowherd: So Carson Wentz, listen, nobody knows if he can be solved. The feeling is that if he went to Indianapolis with Frank Reich, those would be the best odds, but (GM) Chris Ballard is judicious, patient, and measured. They are not just throwing away draft picks. Chicago may be in a more desperate situation where (GM) Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy may have a year and get (fired). So if you’re asking me where Carson Wentz goes, I think the Colts would be more measured in their offer than the Bears would, therefore I would think Chicago would be the front runner (Monday) morning?

Breer: I would follow your instinct on that. I think Chicago is the front runner (Monday) morning. And I do know that there is a feeling inside the building from Ryan Pace, the coaching staff, Matt Nagy, John DeFilippo, their pass-game coordinator who got two of the best years out of Carson Wentz in 2016 and 2017 as his quarterbacks coach, they believe that mechanically they can fix him.

Now one of the issues with Carson Wentz is he hasn’t always responded well to hard coaching and so that is something they would have to get past, because DeFilippo was the bad cop in Philadelphia. I think the issue right now Colin, is where Carson Wentz wants to go. I think it’s become pretty clear he’d rather go to Indianapolis. I think part of it now for the Eagles is ‘if our best return right now is Chicago over Indy, then we need to convince Carson Wentz this is the only place you are going bud, and you need to buck up and accept this and realize the Bears are going to give you a good chance.’

I can understand why Carson Wentz would be skeptical. Because look, Indianapolis, they are stable. Chris Ballard, Frank Reich, they are going nowhere.  In Chicago you would be going to play for guys whose jobs would be on the line in 2021. But I think it’s pretty clear at this point the Bears have pushed harder than the Colts to get Carson Wentz. The Eagles are probably going to get their best return with Carson Wentz going to Chicago. I think the last piece of it becomes, can you convince Carson Wentz it is the best thing to do?Because I think the Bears would like to know that Wentz is on board before pulling the trigger on a trade.”

Hmm, well Indy is the better gig, for sure. Better team, better roster, better offensive line. Playing in a smaller market with less scrutiny would probably be preferable, for sure. Chicago would kill Wentz after two bad games if they traded a lot of assets to get him. They’re kind of like us, the fans.

For the Eagles, it doesn’t really matter too much. Like Breer said, you’re just looking for the best return. You don’t give a shit where Carson goes, you just need to get him on the same page. If he reportedly wants out, then you can’t be picky where you go. You concede your leverage.

Let’s just hope and pray. Pray to the football Gods in heaven that is saga is nearing an end.
