Flyers vs. Rangers Betting Pick (March 15, 2021)

The Philadelphia Flyers enter tonight’s game on a two-game losing streak. They’ve struggled as of late, playing to a mediocre 5-5-0 record over their last 10 games. At 13-9-3, the Flyers find themselves in fifth place in the stacked East Division.

The biggest issue Philadelphia faces is what is quickly becoming a crisis in their own zone. Philadelphia has been linked to Nashville defenseman Mattias Ekholm in recent weeks, indicating that the Flyers’ front office is acutely aware of an issue with defensive depth, especially in the top four.

As if that weren’t enough, the Flyers’ goalie tandem, which entered the season viewed by many as one of the best in the NHL, has struggled as of late. After serving as a strong backup to the struggling Carter Hart, Brian Elliott ran into a buzzsaw in the form of the Washington Capitals. As such, Carter Hart will get the start in net for the Flyers.

The New York Rangers are in the midst of their own rough stretch as they’ve gone 1-3-0 in their last four games, which dropped them to 11-12-3 on the season. The lone win, however, was an impressive one as they handed the Boston Bruins a 4-0 loss at TD Garden. New York appeared reinvigorated with Artemi Panarin in the lineup, as he contributed an assist to the cause.

The teams have split their first two matchups against one another this season. Which team will break the tie?

Bets We Like With a Flyers Win

Money Puck gives the Flyers a 51.8% chance of winning this game. Meanwhile, Philadelphia’s implied win probability based on the moneyline is slightly higher at 53%.

Flyers Win and Over 6 Goals (+190, DraftKings Sportsbook)

To be clear, picking this game is as close to a toss-up as it gets, as indicated by the oddsmakers and projection model. Carter Hart needs to reestablish himself as one of the best young goalies in the NHL sooner rather than later. The issue staring Hart and the Flyers in the face is his home/road splits this season. The 22-year-old netminder has allowed 3.85 goals on the road this season as opposed to 3.38 at home, with a .881 save percentage on the road vs. .893 at home. His issues this season have manifested themselves regardless of location.

All of that said, Philadelphia should feel an extra bit of motivation in this game as Alain Vigneault returns to the arena he called home for five seasons. Center Kevin Hayes spent the first 4 2/3 of his career as a Blueshirt. One has to assume he’ll come out with a renewed sense of urgency.

As for going over six goals, which admittedly seems like a high total, it’s worth noting that each of Philadelphia’s last six games as favorites following a loss have gone over the total goals threshold. In the month of March, Philadelphia has seen the at least seven total goes be scored in six of seven games, including results of 5-4 (SO), 5-3, and 5-4 in their last three games.

Philadelphia is in desperate need of a win to get things going back on the right track. New York has lost each of their past five night games following a road win. If Philadelphia is going to get back to the form that made them an early favorite to finish in the East Division’s top two, it needs to start tonight.

Bets We Like Independent of Outcome

Each Team to Record 1+ Goal in the First Period (+165, BetMGM)

The New York Rangers have been a hot-and-cold team in terms of scoring from game-to-game over the past week or so. However, there’s one trend that’s been consistent: they score early in games. In fact, the Rangers have registered at least one goal in four of their last five games. Their biggest first period over that stretch came back on March 6, when they found the back of the net three times in a 6-3 victory.

The Flyers have also seen an encouraging first period trend going back to March 6. Philadelphia has deposited the puck in the back of the net in five of their last six games, with the lone outlier coming in Saturday’s loss to the Washington Capitals.

If you’re looking for a recent trend to put money on independent of outcome, this could be worth a look.

Sean Couturier to Record Over 0.5 Point (-143, DraftKings)

Sean Couturier has 18 points through 14 full games he’s played in this season. The reigning Selke Trophy winner has recorded at least one point in twelve of his last thirteen games, including six goals and eleven assists.

This is a prop bet that we have touted for quite some time and it’s continued to pay dividends. The -143 odds being offered by DraftKings Sportsbook are identical to what the market set ahead of Thursday and Saturday’s games.

Sean Couturier to Record Over 0.5 Assist (+130, BetMGM)

This is a slight variation on the previous prop, accounting for slightly more lucrative odds on a more specific market. Sean Couturier has recorded at least one assist in his last four games. For those interested in narrowing the focus from recording a point to recording an assist, Couturier to record at least one assist can be had at +130 odds with BetMGM.

Flyers vs. Rangers Prediction

Pick: This game is as close to a must-win for Philadelphia as it gets. They’ll need to pick up at least three of the four points on the line against the Rangers over. the next two games before a three-game set with the Islanders. Take the Flyers to Win and Over 6 Goals. Also, get in on the Sean Couturier point market.
