Consume this news like a tasty Hungarian goulash:

Good signing. The Union really needed a #10. They’ve been playing Jamiro Monteiro in that spot this year, but he’s probably better as a #8, which is where he played last year before Brenden Aaronson was transferred to Austria. They’ve been in need of some creativity and quality in the final third, which has been a little janky and disjointed at times this season.

Gazdag is 25 years old and scored 13 goals and added six assists in 30 appearances this season. He’s played six times for the Hungarian national team and broke into the side two years ago after 20+ caps for his country’s youth teams.

He’s played his entire career with Honved, so it looks like he’s ready for the next step, and this video here shows all of his goals and assists from his breakout season:

That flick at 1:01 is absolutely outrageous. Incredibly hard to do. Looks like he’s got good pace and some skill on the ball. Seems like he’s also a set piece and penalty taker, which the Union could use. Gazdag also comes across as a guy who gets into the box and puts himself in good goal scoring and poaching positions.

This is a two-year deal with third and fourth year options. The transfer fee was reportedly just under two million dollars, which is solid. Decent money, but affordable, and a good sign that the Union are willing to spend some of the cash they made on the Aaronson and Mark McKenzie and sales.

Let’s give Daniel Gazdag a warm Philadelphia welcome.
