On Monday night, the Philadelphia 76ers will host the Orlando Magic at the Wells Fargo Center. The Sixers somewhat inexplicably lost in double-overtime to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday night to fall to 10-10. The Magic is 4-17 and has lost six games in a row.

Let’s get into our Sixers vs. Magic betting pick with player prop predictions, odds, and analysis for this November 29, 2021 matchup.

Sixers vs. Magic Betting Pick (November 29, 2021)

Orlando Magic guard Markelle Fultz – still feels strange to type those words – volunteered some measured, objective and ultimately fairly kind words about Sixers fans last week:

I didn’t feel like hate or anything. I felt love even from the fans. I think a lot of people get confused because they hear people in the media talking about how the fans treat me bad, but I never felt like the fans treated me bad. I felt like they always showed love when I was in a game, they’re very supportive. They’re very happy. I got a standing ovation when I came back. I understand that Philly love. They die and breathe their team, so they’re gonna get on you when you’re doing bad; they’re gonna love you when you’re good, and that’s kind of how my mom raised me, you know?

This quote demonstrates mature growth from Fultz, now 23 years of age. It was also made possible by the passage of time and the success (albeit over a short time) that Fultz was experiencing with the Magic prior to his ACL tear in January of this year. Above those factors, though, there’s this: Sixers fans never despised or wished ill on Fultz. Sixers fans wanted nothing more than for Fultz to overcome his thoracic outlet syndrome, to find his confidence again, to justify if not being the #1 overall selection in the NBA Draft, then to at least justify being selected in the first round.

The contrast to be seen here between the way Sixers fans used to feel about Fultz and how they now feel about Ben Simmons is very, very sharp. Sixers fans have turned on Simmons harder than they have against any superstar athlete this city has seen in decades. Probably you need to go back to the end of the Eric Lindros era with the Flyers to recall a fan base that did a 180-degree spin on a great player. In both cases, fair or not, the fans’ issue was this: Both guys, in the moment, didn’t seem to want it very much. “It,” in that sentence, meaning greatness or championship aspirations. In Philadelphia, you’re far better off wanting it but not having it rather than having it and not wanting it.

There were whispers about whether Fultz wanted it when he played here, but those were borne of frustration and of unreasonable expectations based on where he was drafted. And as Fultz pointed out, when he was finally ready to play here, the fans essentially tried to will him to play to his fullest potential. It didn’t work out here for Fultz, but most Sixers fans can forgive and forget with him.

That’s not going to be how it ends for Simmons here. Not hardly.

The Sixers are heavily favored tonight because the Magic is terrible, because the Sixers are relatively healthy and because the Magic is pretty banged up. The Sixers are also heavily favored tonight because, after blowing a winnable game against the Timberwolves two nights ago, the Sixers should be properly motivated to hang a number on the Magic. But it takes two competent teams to get to an over/under like 204.5. This total projects a fair amount of garbage time played in the fourth quarter with players who aren’t potent scorers.

Bets We Like Independent of Outcome

Sixers -4.5 in the First Quarter (-115, Caesars Sportsbook)

This is an unusually high number of points for a team to be favored by in the first quarter, but in this game it’s warranted. The Magic is a 14-point underdog and will be missing its leading scorer (Cole Anthony). Mo Bamba is questionable with a back injury – it’s tough enough to deal with Embiid when you’re fully healthy. Terrence Ross, the Magic’s only real veteran presence, is also questionable with his own back injury. The Magic has lost six straight games, they’re 4-17 and they already know they’re on a slow boat to nowhere this season. This is a prime spot for the Sixers to go for an early kill shot.

Embiid predictably (i.e., we predicted it here) went off in a big way on Saturday night in his first game back from a lengthy COVID-19 absence. Granted, a lot of his points came at the free throw line in a game where the Sixers got, shall we say, a really kind whistle. But a 40-burger is a 40-burger. As for tonight, Bamba is a decent player and all, but he’s not good enough to deal with Embiid alone. The biggest problem with this prop is the possibility that Embiid exits early in the fourth quarter with 22 points because the Sixers are up 30. We’ll take that risk, though.

Tyrese Maxey Over 17.5 Points (-110, BetMGM Sportsbook)

Maxey predictably (i.e., we predicted it here) had an off night on Saturday night. The return of Joel Embiid and the presence of Tobias Harris on the floor compelled Maxey to take some different shots, and his famous floater wasn’t falling. But that was against the Timberwolves, a team with some length and a couple of athletic veteran guards (Anthony Edwards, D’Angelo Russell). The Magic has, like, none of that. Assuming that the Sixers get out quickly, Maxey should be able to get to double digits by halftime, and from there it’s not much further to 18.

Well…fourteen (or thirteen and a half, frankly) is a whole lot of points to give up in an NBA game. Look at it this, way, though: Would 10-10 be favored by 4-17 under normal circumstances? Of course not. That’s usually a nine-point or nine and a half-point line. The Sixers are deceivingly good for a .500 team, and the Magic is a 4-17 team with its best player unavailable tonight. It’d be easy to fall into any number of parlay- and prop-related traps with this game. Not us, though. Sometimes, the simple choice is the best choice.
