Flyers-Rangers Preview

The Flyers offensive woes have developed into a chronic issue that is costing them game after game and has seen them slide all the way down into seventh place in the Metropolitan Division. The Flyers need to find a scoring touch, and fast. They scored just 24 goals in the entire month of November (4-6-3). They’ve also struggled mightily on the power play, going a putrid 3-for-40 (7.5%) in November and only a slightly better 5-for-54 (9.3%) in their last 17 games.

Defensively, the Flyers are starting to struggle too. Whereas they were getting elite goaltending prior to the current losing skid, they have allowed at least four goals in five of the last six games, and have watched their goalie tandem of Carter Hart and Martin Jones drop from the top three in the NHL amongst goaltending tandems all the way to the middle of the pack, where they are now 18th in the NHL

Conversely, the Rangers have won three straight and 7-of-8 despite having two games postponed by their opponents having too many players in the COVID-19 protocol (Ottawa and the New York Islanders).

The Rangers are proving to be one of the better teams in the NHL with a top end goalie (Igor Shesterkin), one of the game’s best defensemen (Adam Fox), and a high-powered offense being led by Chris Kreider (15 goals in 20 games) and Artemi Panarin (21 points in 20 games).

Both teams are coming into the game with more rest than expected because the Flyers also had a game with the Islanders postponed, so it is expected to be Shesterkin vs. Carter Hart in net.

The Flyers will be getting Kevin Hayes back in the lineup tonight. Hayes has played just two games this season while dealing with complications related to two core muscle surgeries. He says he feels better than he did at any point last season.

Panarin only has five goals so far this season, taking on more of a role as a playmaker than a scorer with guys like Kreider scoring at a ridiculously efficient rate. However, his five goals are tied for second most on the Rangers. So, if it’s not going to be Kreider carrying the Rangers to a win, Panarin is the next-best option. Not to mention, Panarin absolutely kills the Flyers. He has 30 points in 21 career games against the Flyers with nine goals. With the Rangers a heavy favorite here, it’s a good bet that if they win again, that Panarin will be a big part of the offense as the team’s leading scorer, and there’s good value here on him to score a goal.

Yes, it’s his first game back after missing a couple weeks. And it’s only his third game this season, but Hayes has a tendency to be a driver for the Flyers success.

Since joining the Flyers, Hayes has 31 goals, 22 assists and 53 points in 67 wins but is just 5-17-22 in 59 losses.

In addition, the Flyers need scoring and he’s the new guy back in the lineup who has an ability to put the puck in the net. Look for Hayes to be a spark in more ways than one, and if he gets a goal, look for the Flyers to really respond as well, as the Flyers are 28-3-2 in games that Hayes scores a goal.

Look for the Flyers to play a different style against the Rangers than we’ve seen in the last few games. They Flyers could switch to more of a trapping team to try to aid the defense, which has been struggling of late. This will also help Carter Hart, who has been mostly solid in net.

Not to mention, eight of the Flyers’ last nine games as underdogs following a road loss have gone UNDER the total goals line. They will look to keep it a low scoring affair to try to snap their losing skid.

Flyers vs. Rangers Prediction

The Flyers need a win in the worst way and they are going to go to the wall tonight to try and create the upset to get back on track before next week’s heavy schedule against more top end opponents kicks in.

It’s not ridiculous to think the Flyers can pull this off either. They’ve won road games this season against Edmonton, Washington and Carolina and took Pittsburgh and Florida to overtime.

We like the upset tonight. Go with the Flyers.

Prediction: Flyers 3, Rangers 2
