Flyers-Bruins Preview
The Flyers find themselves nine points behind the Bruins for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. As much as the Flyers have struggled in the past 20 games or so, the Bruins have suddenly gotten hot.
Not only are they trailing Boston by nine points, but the Bruins have a pair of games in hand, so this amounts to as much of a must-win for the Flyers as you can have in mid-January.
The good news for the Flyers, who had a game against Carolina postponed on Tuesday because of COVID-19, is that they are finally almost back to full health, at least as far as COVID players are concerned.
Only defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen remains in COVID protocol. The Flyers will be getting defensemen Travis Sanheim and Ivan Provorov and forwards Claude Giroux and Travis Konecny back into the lineup. That’s a lot of talent returning, however all four players were playing last month when the Flyers lost 10 straight games.
Also, Sean Couturier, Derick Brassard and Ryan Ellis all still remain out of the lineup, so the Flyers are still shorthanded, although not as much as they’ve been in the past few games when they had up to six players in the COVID protocol as well.
Meanwhile, the Bruins have been playing inspired hockey since coming back from the Holiday pause.
After having six consecutive games postponed by COVID, the Bruins have gone 6-1-0 in the seven games since, and have exploded offensively, outscoring their opponents 33-16 in those seven games.
The Bruins are playing their eighth game in 13 days, though, and are playing on consecutive nights after defeating Montreal Wednesday 5-1.
The big news for the Bruins is veteran goalie Tuukka Rask will be making his first appearance for the team in 218 days, returning after a six-month rehab from off-season surgery to repair a torn labrum in his hip.
Offensively, Brad Marchand has been absolutely on fire and became just the sixth Bruin Wednesday to register at least three consecutive multiple goal games. Marchand has seven goals in the last three contests, all Bruins wins.
The Bruins will be missing defensemen Derek Forbort and Connor Clifton, as both are in the COVID protocol. Also without John Moore, who suffered an upper body injury against the Canadiens, the Bruins are digging deep into the depth chart to have Tyler Lewington patrolling the blue line on their third pairing tonight.

Bets We Like with a Flyers win
Flyers to win and 5-plus total goals scored (+350, BetMGM)
This is what BetMGM calls the Lion’s Boost. And with the odds and value, it’s worth a flier on the Flyers. It’s rare that you see such a lopsided line as this game, and frankly we can’t tell you the last time the Flyers were this big of an underdog, but they come into the game well-rested and getting players back, while Boston is playing for the eighth time in 13 days. No matter how well you are playing, at some point the legs just aren’t going to be able to go as fast as the mind wants them.
With Rask playing for the first time in forever and the Bruins shorthanded on the defensive side, it at least gives the Flyers a window of opportunity to pull the upset. If Boston scores first, forget it. The Flyers are a fragile team and break their structure at the first sign of trouble.
But if the Flyers can have a good first period, and get the lead, they could pull this upset, especially since they know how big this game is. for them.

Bets We Like With a Bruins win
Bruins to win by two goals or more (-108, FanDuel Sportsbook)

The Flyers don’t lose one-goal games unless they go to overtime or shootout. All of their regulation losses have been by two or more goals.
With the Bruins scoring the way they’ve been since the pause (4.71 goals per game), and the Flyers still trying to piecemeal a defense, a two-goal win seems probable and pretty much gets you back to betting even money as opposed to laying the big wood to take the Bruins straight up.
Not to mention, the Bruins have covered the puck line in their last five home games against Eastern Conference opponents.

- Six of the last seven Bruins games have had at least six goals scored.
- Rask is starting in goal for the first time in forever.
- The Flyers have allowed at least four goals in three of the last four games.

Flyers vs. Bruins Prediction
The Flyers need this one bad. But they are still more shorthanded than the Bruins, and these teams are going in opposite directions. While sometimes when a team on a winning streak plays a team on a losing streak, both streaks end simultaneously. But this isn’t one of those. Boston will keep cruising toward a playoff spot and the Flyers will continue to slink into oblivion.
Prediction: Bruins 5, Flyers 2
