It’s late January, so you know what that means. The Eagles are eliminated from the playoffs, and so Philadelphia does a week where we talk about Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs instead. We’ve done at least 10 Big Red columns on this website over the last two years, and the honest truth is that we feel as though there’s nothing left to write about Andy. We were happy to see him win it all in Kansas City. The Eagles got their ring, Andy got his ring, and now we can all die happy, right?

Apparently not. Reid’s Chiefs blew a multi-score lead on Sunday and then Patrick Mahomes choked in overtime to send KC crashing out in the AFC Championship Game. Perhaps the biggest takeaway is that Joe Burrow saved us from Jackson Mahomes and Brittany Matthews, who would have produced some utterly horrifying TikTok videos in the two weeks leading up to the Super Bowl:

I’m in for nine dollars and will even increase the donation to $10.

But back to Andy Reid:

That was his sixth loss in a conference championship game. He’s 2-2 with the Chiefs and famously 1-4 with the Eagles. The biggest issue Sunday was the screw up at the end of the first half, when KC was on the goal line with zero timeouts, and instead of kicking a field goal, they tried to find the end zone but fucked up the clock, and then went into halftime without extending the lead. I honestly blame Mahomes for this more than Andy, since he shouldn’t have thrown short of the sticks with that little time remaining, but if Andy is smarter he probably just kicks the field goal there and takes the points into the locker room.

The bottom line, however, is that the Chiefs have blown multiple three-score leads in the postseason under Big Red. Two of them were blown 21-3 games, the second one being the Titans loss back in 2018, when they jumped out to a big lead. The third instance was when they were up 38-10 on Indy back in 2014 and then coughed it up in a 45-44 loss.

Imagine if Andy didn’t have that Super Bowl. He’d probably be the all-time king of not getting it done. This Chiefs team can absolutely win another Super Bowl, and maybe they will, but if they don’t, we might look back on them as the Phillies of 15 years ago, a team that won a ring but probably should have won a second.

There are still a lot of people in Philadelphia who laugh when Andy Reid loses in KC, and I’m not sure why. Seems like dopey WIP morning show listeners who are still annoyed that he never won the Super Bowl here. Imagine holding a corny vendetta for that long. We won a ring with Doug and Nick and so it’s time to get the fuck over it. Andy hasn’t coached here in 10 years. Regardless, every further misstep from Big Red rewrites a portion of his legacy, and that is one of a coach who has had way too many letdowns over the years. I’m curious as to how we’ll view Andy Reid ten or fifteen years from now.
