Flyers-Jets Preview

The Flyers finally won a game. They tried to lose it, blowing two separate two-goal leads, including one in the third period, but Scott Laughton scored in overtime and the Flyers defeated the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday 4-3 for their first win of 2022, snapping a 13-game winless skid.

It doesn’t mean all of their ills have been cured. This is still a flawed hockey team. But, if nothing else, they have played a better brand of hockey in recent games, despite the losses, than they were when the streak began or even the way they were playing in their first winless streak of the season, a 10-gamer that ultimately cost coach Alain Vigneault his job.

Cam Atkinson carried the Flyers in that game with two goals, including his third shorthanded goal of the season, and he had an assist on Laughton’s game-winner. Claude Giroux continued his consistently excellent play this season, and now has three goals in the last five games, amassing 35 points in 41 games played this season.

This will be the final game before the All-Star break. Giroux will be the Flyers’ lone representative at the game, making his seventh appearance in the contest.

Carter Hart has also been strong in net for the Flyers. His numbers are a bit pedestrian, but considering his team has lost 23-of-30, they could be a lot worse. He made 37 saves in the win over Los Angeles and will get the nod again tonight against the Jets.

Winnipeg arrives into Philadelphia coming off a much-needed 4-1 road win in St. Louis. Prior to that, the Jets had lost six straight (0-4-2) and are just 4-5-2 since the holiday pause. They sit five points out of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The Jets will be getting defenseman Josh Morrissey back in the lineup tonight after he missed the previous three games in the COVID protocol.

Also returning to the lineup tonight will be goalie Connor Hellebuyck, who had the night off in St. Louis.

Hellebuyck, one of the top goalies in the NHL a season ago, has had an up-and-down season for the Jets so far, but will look to gain some confidence going forward against a Flyers team that struggles to score.

You might think we’re making fun of the Flyers with this pick, but we’re not. Mayhew has been a minor league-lifer who is getting an extended chance to show he belongs at the NHL level and, to his credit, has been an excellent contributor to the Flyers.

He’s one of those skate hard, work harder types and he’s trying to make an impression on a team that is evaluating anyone and everyone at this point for a future role. He’s played just 11 games for the Flyers and has three goals, but all three have come in the last five games.

If the Flyers are getting production from players like Mayhew, who are playing in their bottom six, then that can be enough to swing the tide in their favor.

The bookmakers don’t believe Mayhew has another goal in him, but if he gets one, 4-1 odds on your bet can go a long way to making your night and helping the Flyers win.

The Flyers struggle to stop top scorers from their opponents. It’s why they give up so many hat tricks and power play goals.

Well, Connor is the man for the Jets. Their lone All-Star, Connor has 24 goals and 44 points in just 41 games this season for Winnipeg. He’s scored 10 goals in the Jets’ last 18 games.

Connor will have chances against the Flyers like Chris Kreider has chances against the Flyers when they play the Rangers, and we all know how Kreider scores against the Flyers. Take Connor to the bank.

Another thing about the Flyers is they give up a lot of shots. Hart has made at least 30 saves in more than half of his starts this season (14-of-27) and the Jets are a top-10 team in getting shots on goal, averaging 33.4 per game. This is one of those games where we expect a high volume coming Hart’s way, meaning this bet is a good one regardless of who you think might win.

Flyers vs. Jets Prediction

The Flyers are playing better, but it’s hard to imagine that a team with no playoff aspirations looking at vacation-time after tonight will have great energy against a team that is still scrapping for a playoff spot. Winnipeg isn’t a dominant team, but they have more to play for than the Flyers and will bring their A-game. And if you want to give one more bet a go, you can get good value on the Jets with the puck line – especially with these two trends – the Flyers have lost 12 straight night games (we only point that out because when they played the Kings it felt like 10 a.m. to the Los Angeles squad) and the road team has covered the puck line in seven of the Jets last eight games.

Prediction: Jets 4, Flyers 2
