Pat McAfee Theorizes that Carson Wentz Wasn't Jim Irsay's Guy to Begin With
Colts owner Jim Irsay said some stuff at the NFL annual meetings about Carson Wentz that raised eyebrows. He spoke about “concerning” talks with team veterans and how the Wentz era was a mistake that they needed to quickly move on from. Seems like he really couldn’t stand the guy at all.
Pat McAfee played for the Colts, and calls it how he sees it, so I’d put some stock into McAfee saying that he’s not sure Wentz was ever Irsay’s guy at all:

It’s plausible even without inside knowledge because the thought was that Frank Reich could get Wentz playing like he did in 2017. Maybe Irsay wasn’t on board with that, but Reich and Chris Ballard said, “hey listen, we can make this work, trust us.”
And then Carson goes out and plays an okay season, throws 27 touchdowns but commits some dumb mistakes. He doesn’t get vaccinated. The team chokes in Jacksonville. If Irsay was never fond of the trade to begin with, then he’s jumping off the ship faster than the average owner would. It wouldn’t take much. Beyond that, we know Carson is a weird personality who doesn’t exactly click with other guys in the locker room, so you throw all that into a blender and you get another trade smoothie.
I’m fascinated by the Commanders thing. Honest to God, Terry McLaurin is probably the best receiver Wentz has had since 2017, unless you want to count that Zach Ertz year. He’ll throw the ball more down there in the swamp, because they ain’t handing off to Jonathan Taylor 700 times a game. Antonio Gibson is talented. Ron Rivera is a good coach. The stink of Daniel Snyder wafts over that franchise, but maybe Carson plugs his nostrils and finally figures it out. Or maybe he doesn’t and gets traded for a third straight season.
