Thank you to Washington reporter Nicki Jhabvala for putting this reel together. Check’s in the mail:

A quick breakdown here:

  • sack 1: four man rush, looks like a five-step drop out of shotgun
  • sack 2: four man rush, play action, Eagles just win their 1v1 battles
  • sack 3: four man rush, another five-step drop from the shotgun
  • sack 4: four man rush, Carson statuesque in the pocket, just completely unaware
  • sack 5: four man rush, shotgun, some play action, nothing doing, fumble
  • sack 6: four man rush, shotgun, Carson at least trying to throw the ball here
  • sack 7: five man rush, they actually brought T.J. Edwards here on a 2nd and 12, right tackle loses his 1v1
  • sack 8: four man rush on 4th and 22, obviously a passing down, but even then the line can’t buy him any time at all
  • sack 9: five man rush, T.J. Edwards again

Upon further review, the Communist offensive line was absolutely horrendous in this game. Carson was also bad. He’s just got zero pocket awareness in there. 2017 Carson was good at using his body to wriggle free and do some Big Ben stuff, like stay upright, squirm out of tight spaces, and then get out and do things with his feet, but you don’t see any of that anymore. He looks nothing like the guy we saw during the Super Bowl season, pre-injury.

It’s wild to me that they got to him SEVEN TIMES with just a four-man rush. Only twice did they send a 5th guy, who was a linebacker, so they were essentially able to keep seven linebackers+defensive backs down the field and cover all these guys while the d-line feasted. I’d actually love to see the all-22 film of this game, because I can’t imagine Terry McLaurin and company were getting open considering the Birds didn’t have to sacrifice anything on the back end in order to pressure the QB.
