Joe Giglio posted this on Twitter after the Titans win:

The point is to say that Hurts has more or less eclipsed what Wentz did in 2017.

Joe is, of course, a Wentz hater, right up there with Bob Wankel. They have bonded in the past over their Wentz hate, which is fine, and I don’t necessarily disagree with the thought here, because I think Jalen has quite easily passed the eye test in addition to what the numbers clearly show.

The real takeaway in my mind is that if Wentz was an MVP shoe-in before he tore his ACL that season, then certainly Jalen Hurts has to the frontrunner now. The books have Hurts sitting around +175, behind Patrick Mahomes at +125. Mahomes already has 30 touchdowns and has thrown for 3,808 yards, and KC’s schedule I think has been slightly tougher up to this point, but Hurts is doing what he’s doing in two separate phases, while Mahomes is carving up teams primarily in the passing game. Maybe I’m biased, but I’d give MVP to Hurts over Mahomes at this point because of what he’s doing on the ground and the fact that his team has the best NFL record.

Anyway, if we’re comparing 2022 Hurts to 2017 Wentz, I do think Jalen has a slightly better supporting cast. I’d do it like this:

  • WR1: A.J. Brown > Alshon Jeffery
  • WR2: DeVonta Smith > Nelson Agholor
  • WR3: Torrey Smith = Quez Watkins
  • WR4: Zach Pascal > Mack Hollins
  • TE1: Zach Ertz > Dallas Goedert
  • TE2: Trey Burton > Jack Stoll
  • RB: Miles Sanders is better this year than both Blount and Ajayi were back then
  • offensive line: they were both really damn good, this is probably a wash

That’s my honest take. I think Carson had the better tight ends, but Jalen has the better receivers and best running back of the group. People will probably go on Facebook and call me a Wentz “apologist” or some shit, but whatever. Wentz was elite in 2017 and Hurts is elite in 2022. What Carson did in 2017 and what Jalen is doing now amounts to two of the best Eagles quarterbacking seasons EVER.
