Lost in he CJGJ hubbub was the Eagles signing free agent safety Justin Evans. He played 15 games for the Saints last year and had a forced fumble, a couple of pass break ups, and 29 tackles.

If you’re not familiar with his game, it’s because he missed multiple seasons due to injury. The CliffsNotes is that he was injured coming into the combine, didn’t do all of the drills, still was selected in the second round, played two seasons in Tampa, and then went on IR in 2019 with an Achilles tear. He landed on reserve/PUP and then was released with a failed physical designation. He’ll turn 28 in August.

This is basically a low-risk, high-reward type of move, similar to Rashaad Penny if you wanna make that comparison. If the guy can stay healthy, he’s a reclamation piece and can contribute, and if not, you didn’t break the bank for him. The Eagles will absolutely add more safety help to make up for the departures of Marcus Epps and Chauncey Gardner-Johnson. Evans is a camp body who will get a shot to compete for a roster spot, and he’s also played more than 250 special teams snaps in his career, so there’s some potential there. Can’t hurt bringing him in and seeing what he’s got.
