Clutch Jake Elliott is Just as Good as Any NFL Kicker, and Right There Alongside David Akers
Jake Elliott is (rightfully) receiving tons of praise for his ridiculous 59-yard field goal kick on Sunday. The kick was indeed ridiculous: 59 yards, in the rain, into the wind, and nobody on the Eagles had any doubt that he would make it. That speaks volumes to how highly the team thinks of Elliott. They see the truth the nation is finally coming around to, that Jake Elliott is the most clutch player on the Philadelphia Eagles, and maybe the most clutch kicker in the entire National Football League.
Really, the national media should have started talking about Elliott’s prowess a while ago. He’s already been voted NFC Special Teams Player of the Week twice (Week 1 and Week 4), and he’ll likely be selected again when Week 12’s awards are announced.
If you recall, in that Week 1 game against the Patriots, the Eagles offense could not get it together. They went three-and-out four times in a damn row. The team was up 16-0 in the second quarter and the sky was falling, and when the Patriots cut the halftime lead to 16-14, all hope seemed lost.
Enter Jake Elliott, stage left.
He made four field goals overall on the day, three of them in the second half, and accounted for 12 of the Eagles’ 25 total points. For those of you keeping score, that’s double what the offense provided (six points). Elliott was the Eagles’ only point scorer in the second half. Those four field goals were from 32, 56 (!), 48, and 51 yards out.
(He also missed a PAT, but I think that can be forgiven, considering the two field goals made from 50+ yards.)
In Week 4 against the Commanders, Elliott flat out won the game for the Birds. Once again, he made four field goals: three in regulation from 41, 47, and 36 yards out, and then the game-winner in overtime from 54 (!!!!) yards out.
And then there’s this week’s performance. While Elliott only kicked one field goal, it was at the most pivotal moment imaginable. He spoke postgame about his confidence in those high-leverage spots:
“I think those are situations I’ve always thrived in, going back to high school through college. I feel like I’ve been put in those situations quite a bit, and yeah, for whatever reason, I really like those situations. So I feel an extra boost of confidence and like I said, we got one of the best units up front, so they do a great job.”
Ice in his veins.
Nailing that kick from 59 yards in those conditions is unbelievable. It’s enough to put Elliott in the conversation with Justin Tucker as the league’s best kicker, and in the conversation with David Akers as the Eagles’ best kicker. Even if he’s not the best, he’s certainly the most clutch.
“AYE YO, MISS! MISS”
Gabe Davis was screaming at the top of his lungs to get Jake Elliott to miss the kick 💀
