They now have everyone’s attention, and with that comes an expectation to at least make the playoffs. Wins over Tampa Bay, Detroit, and Boston over the next five days could not just help the Flyers’ playoff standing in the Eastern Conference, but keep them within range of the New York Rangers for the Metropolitan Division.
The Flyers are two points up on Tampa Bay and Detroit while Saturday’s game in Boston is a chance to measure up against the Atlantic Division leader before a week-long break.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the Flyers are +1600 at DraftKings and +1700 at FanDuel to win the Metro. It’s a bit of a long shot, but the Flyers have three games left against the Rangers, so there’s a chance to make up the deficit.
If you want to use the big-time coaching cliche of “focus on one game at a time,” the Flyers need to rebound from two home losses to beat the Lightning, and they’ll have to do that without Owen Tippett.
A low-scoring game is probably in the cards at the Wells Fargo Center. Six of Tampa Bay’s last seven road games featured six or fewer goals and they held opponents to one or two goals in four of those contests.
Additionally, the Lightning have not allowed more than three goals across their last six games.
The Flyers’ home trends sway more toward higher-scoring games, as each of their last eight home games had at least five goals. But it’s important to note that four of those contests had exactly five goals, which is probably why the over/under of 6.5 goals for tonight is slightly a plus-money bet.
There aren’t many clear-cut player prop angles for what’s expected to be a tight contest, but the Flyers could have one advantage. Tampa Bay conceded the eighth-most shots per game to right wingers in the last 10 games. It’s an oddly specific stat and one that might not be good to take advantage of since the Flyers are jumbling their lines with Tippett out and only have 11 forwards expected to skate.
