Joel Embiid Gets Surgery; Now We Wait
Joel Embiid had surgery and will be re-evaluated in four weeks:
How Embiid’s recovery goes over next few weeks will be paramount but there continues to be a belief that the door isn’t closed on the possibility of the reigning MVP’s return this season, sources tell ESPN. https://t.co/FsrRukSREb

Whatever Daryl Morey decides to do this week will most likely tell us how confident the Sixers are that Embiid comes back this season. If you tuned in Monday night, you know the Sixers are unwatchable. No one can create a shot other than Tyrese Maxey, Mo Bamba and Paul Reed aren’t sufficient enough replacements at center, and the injuries and sicknesses affecting the team have zapped their depth. It’s a tough watch.
I don’t think it’s crazy to wonder if they’ll even be in the play-in game if/when Embiid returns. If they want to get the six seed, they’re going to need someone at the deadline that can help them tread water and apparently Daryl is calling around star hunting:
“Philadelphia has flexibility, they have picks, they don’t have Joel Embiid right now … Hasn’t stopped Daryl Morey from calling around the league, and chasing everybody’s superstars who are not available. That’s what he does.”

It would be a perfect end to The Process if the Sixers burn all their best assets overpaying for a player. Kind of ironic after they sucked for all those years and accumulated a bunch.
The four-week timeline puts the Embiid evaluation around early-March. If he goes the full eight weeks from today, which is most likely, he’ll be back on April 2nd against the Thunder. That’ll give him seven games to five games to get in shape and then the Sixers will rely on him to carry them through a grueling two-month stretch.
