ESPN Insider Lists Phillies All-Star "On Trade Block"
Alec Bohm, third baseman: Coming off a career-best season, the 28-year-old Bohm nonetheless finds himself on the trade block. While he was a well-above-average hitter — .280/.332/.448 with 61 extra-base hits — his first-half OPS was nearly 150 points higher than in the second half, and the Phillies are looking to shake up their team after a disappointing postseason ouster by the Mets.
Bohm’s name has been floated a few times since the Phillies’ disappointing loss to the Mets in the National League Division Series. As Passan says in his story, Bohm’s drop in production throughout the season lead to this point, and now the Phillies have a tough decision to make.
Recency bias has struck some fans in regard to Bohm, but it’s not unwarranted. He was benched in Game 3 of the NLDS because his lack of production at the plate, and his demeanor on the field. The 28-year-old snapped back to his past young self under the bright lights this season. The defense, offense, and attitude all weren’t good enough for a player that started the All-Star game just a few months prior.
It’s also worth noting that Alec Bohm carried the Phillies lineup for the first month of this season. He slashed .370/.448/.630 in April, has an .812 OPS in June, and it all started to go downhill from there.
The player that logged 44 doubles in 2024 and succeeded by getting deep in counts once saw 5 pitches in 4 ABs in the NLDS. Which player is here to stay?
Why would Bohm be such a sought-out trade piece across the league? Because of his contract. He has two more years of team control, and won’t become an unrestricted free agent until the end of the 2026 season. Bohm made $4M in 2024, and production like that for that low of a number is eye opening for a team that’s in need of a corner bat.
Alec Bohm, per Spotrac, is estimated to make around $8M in 2025 in what will be his second year of arbitration. Many teams could use a contact bat like his. When he’s on, he’s unstoppable, and we’ve seen that. But the lows are low. How many teams would be willing to take that gamble?
The Phillies could use Bohm as a centerpiece, along with prospects, in a trade for a reliever. Devin Williams and Ryan Helsley are the two big names on the trade block that could be dealt this offseason. Williams is a proven 6-year veteran that logged a 1.25 ERA in 21.2 innings this past season, along with a 1.53 in 2023 and a 1.93 in 2022. Ryan Helsley has canned 82 saves since the start of the 2022 season, and his ERA hasn’t been above 2.50 since 2021.
The Cardinals have been rumored to possibly deal Nolan Arenado this offseason, while the Brewers don’t necessarily have a third baseman of the future. Joey Ortiz took 412 ABs for the Brewers at third base and logged a .235 average with a .712 OPS. The need is there for both teams.
