Allen is one of the most underrated players in the history of the game, and it’s awesome that he’s finally getting the recognition that he deserves. Allen won a Rookie of the Year, MVP, and was elected to the All-Star Game 7 times. He accumulated a 58.7 WAR across 15 seasons, and a 35.4 WAR in 9 years with the Phillies. Allen slashed .290/.371/.530 in Philly with 204 home runs, 655 RBIs, 86 stolen bases, and a career .902 OPS. Across his entire career, he hit .292 with a .912 OPS and a 156 OPS+.
It says a lot about Dick Allen when you see how many people have campaigned for him, especially this year. Legends all across the sport insisted that Allen deserved his spot in Cooperstown, and now he has it.
“I am overjoyed that the Classic Baseball Era Committee has recognized that Dick is worthy of being immortalized in the Baseball Hall of Fame,” said John Middleton in a statement. “It has been a long time coming. The Phillies look forward to celebrating this honor with Dick’s family.”
Dick Allen’s number was retired by the Phillies back in 2020. At the time, Allen was the only Phillie to have his number retired that was not in the Hall of Fame. The Phillies honored honored him in 2020, and he passed away on December 7th of that year at the age of 78 after battling cancer.
“What a tremendous, well-deserved honor for my friend Dick who has always been a Hall of Famer to me,” said Larry Bowa. “He meant so much to the Phillies organization throughout the years. His experience and leadership were instrumental in the development of players like Schmidt, Bob Boone, Greg Luzinski, Gary Maddox and myself. He taught me how to play the game the right way. I am elated that he is finally going into the Hall of Fame.”
