Penn Fires Steve Donahue After Eight-Win Season and 24-Point Loss to Princeton
This is from the Penn Athletics site:
PHILADELPHIA – The John R. Rockwell Head Men’s Basketball Coach at the University of Pennsylvania, Steve Donahue, will not return next season, it was announced today by Alanna Wren, the T. Gibbs Kane, Jr. W’69 Director of Athletics and Recreation.
“I’m appreciative of Steve’s long tenure of leadership and service to Penn basketball and our student-athletes, both as an assistant and head coach,” Wren said. “Steve has been steadfast in his commitment to the program and the development of our student-athletes. I’ve always had great respect for his commitment to Ivy values, and he has been a strong representative of Penn during his career. Unfortunately, the competitive success on the court has not been up to our standards. While difficult, a change in leadership is necessary to provide the championship-caliber experience our student-athletes, alumni and fans expect. We wish Steve and his family the best moving forward.”
Donahue led the Penn program for nine seasons from 2015-25, compiling a 131-130 record and a 63-63 mark in Ivy League play. He was previously an assistant coach at Penn from 1991-2000.
A national search for the next head coach will begin immediately, which will be assisted by Parker Executive Search.
Yeah look, the record says it all. Basically .500 during Donahue’s tenure, with one March Madness appearance to cap off a 24-9 season. The Quakers only mustered four winning seasons in that time frame and have not been competitive in an Ivy League that has seen Yale and Princeton consistently near the top over the past several seasons. Throw in the fact that Penn has basically been a non-player in the Big 5 and there’s not much to hang your hat on. Donahue’s last act as head coach was a 24-point loss at Princeton, which has completely owned the Quakers in a post-COVID world. It’s been ugly. So they are turning the page are moving on to the next coach.
