“We think you’ll like the uniforms we’ll wear on the court next season, too.”
Fans have been calling for the throwback blacks for years now. Former President Chris Heck found himself in a kerfuffle when he made some negative comments about the uniform, saying in 2021 that he “hated that uniform. Absolutely despised it. And the reason is that it wasn’t traditional, it was that ridiculous silk, the ridiculous larger collar…” He was basically saying that it was off brand and clunky, and that the Sixers regime at the time sold out with the jersey. He swore he’d never bring it back, and the compromise ended up being the black Boathouse Row jerseys that were hit or miss among the fan base.
The thing about being a decision maker, or working in marketing at any level, is that on most occasions, the customer is always right, even when they’re wrong. Hypothetically, what would you do if 100 million Sixers fans responded to a survey and said they’d buy a purple jersey with gold trim and epaulets? You would think it’s the dumbest thing in the world, but you also would have to admit that this is what the fan base wants. The customer demand is that they want uniforms that make the players look like The Artist Formerly Known as Prince. So do you ignore the majority or surrender? If Crossing Broad readers demand a PA casino sign up bonus, they will receive a PA casino sign up bonus.
It seems like the new regime has a different philosophy with the black uniforms, so they’re gonna roll them back out to mark the 25th anniversary of the team that went all the way to the finals. Whether you like the uniforms or not, there’s a huge nostalgia factor and nostalgia goes a long way in Philly sports.
