Weird times for Penn State basketball.

The Nittany Lions were 21-10 and having a good campaign until COVID-19 cut short the college basketball season. Then head coach Pat Chambers became the target of an internal investigation that centered on new allegations of misconduct, resulting in his Wednesday resignation.

From ESPN:

In a statement, Penn State said new allegations surfaced after The Undefeated reported in July that Rasir Bolton — who transferred from Penn State to Iowa State in the summer of 2019 — said he decided to leave the Nittany Lions because Chambers made a reference to a noose around Bolton’s neck.

Bolton told The Undefeated that he recalled Chambers saying, “I want to be a stress reliever for you. You can talk to me about anything. I need to get some of this pressure off you. I want to loosen the noose that’s around your neck.”

“The new allegations surfaced shortly after The Undefeated’s article and a review was conducted jointly by Penn State’s Affirmative Action and Athletics Integrity offices,” Penn State said in its statement.

Nobody knows what these “new allegations” are. That is yet to be reported.

Chambers apologized to Bolton in a statement after the Undefeated story came out, and Bolton, as mentioned in the ESPN story, transferred out of the program.

Jim Ferry, a Penn State assistant, will be the interim head coach this year while the school looks for a full-time replacement. Chambers had been with the Lions since 2011 and had a 26-win season two years ago, when PSU won the NIT Tournament. They were in line to make the NCAA Tournament as a 5 or 6 seed this past year.
