610-632….

Take a break from Jonathan Taylor trade discourse and lets talk about something that could actually happen. Can this Phillies team win the World Series? Yes. If they do, would they become the most beloved team in the city ever? Ant San Filippo seems to think so via Bob Wankel yesterday on Crossing Broadcast:

Now you’re probably thinking, “Whichever team brings me the next championship will be the most beloved.” Which is probably true, but think about it – it’s 26 guys that you invest time into almost every day for eight months. Over that span you know at least one thing about every one of them personally. From Edmundo Sosa, to Bryson Stott, to future Hall of Famers like Trea Turner and Bryce Harper. There have already been significant moments five months into the season you’re going to see in the 2023 Phillies Yearbook like *gulp* the ovation, Michael Lorenzen’s no hitter, and the guys supporting the Media Little Leaguers. The vibes are tenfold compared to this point last year.

Look at the ballpark. This is a Tuesday night in August and it’s packed like Game 7 of the World Series:

10,000 more people are cramming into the ballpark this year compared to last:

This city has Phillies Phever just like it did last year… in the middle of an Eagles undefeated season. So can they compete with the 2017 Eagles, Broad Street Bullies, and ’08 Phillies?

100%. There are a ton of personalities on this team. You could read an Alex Coffey or Matt Gelb piece every single day that gives you a nugget of information that you didn’t know before. From the Wet Bandits to Garrett Stubbs buying everyone Phillies overalls to the big balls celly sweeping the city. The bits are remarkable. We had dog masks and Dreams & Nightmares in 2017. In 2008 it was World Fucking Champions at the parade. Those were great! Will they compare to every moment that will happen now until the figurative World Series run? Most likely not. Not to mention, social media gives us even more access than it did five years ago. We get a look into the lives of these guys away from the field. Stott is having a kid. Nick Castellanos and his son’s relationship has been worked into the broadcast daily. Bryce Harper teared up talking about his kids on the LLWS broadcast. This is stuff the average fan can relate to.

You love this team. I love this team. And when they win the World Series this year they’re going to be the most beloved team in Philly sports history.
