After Week 12, the Eagles Missed More than Seven Tackles Per Game

As you know, the Eagles were butt in the second half of the season. They couldn’t defend, couldn’t score, and couldn’t win.
Other that than, everything was fine.
I was curious to see just how bad they were at tackling, specifically, so I went over to SportRadar and discovered that the Eagles missed 96 tackles this year, which was tied for 20th most in the NFL. Their missed tackle percentage was 8.6, which was 17th, and they allowed 64 plays of 20+ yards, which was 13th.
Honestly, all of those numbers are lower than I had thought. So I put a couple of filters on the data and came out with this:
- week 1 through week 12: 52 missed tackles (6th best), missed tackle percentage 7.5 (13th best)
- week 13 through week 18: 44 missed tackles (8th worst), missed tackle percentage 10.2 (10th worst)
The data, which is based off of expert analysis, confirms what we all saw with our own eyes. They were a very good tackling team through the Buffalo game, then a very bad tackling team from San Francisco through the regular season finale in New York.
Keep in mind, we’re blocking off the season in two unequal segments, so it’s even worse than it looks. The first segment is 11 games and the second segment is six games, so if you do some additional math, that’s 4.72 missed tackles per game through the Buffalo win, and then 7.3 missed tackles per game against San Fran, Dallas, Seattle, New York (2x), and Arizona.
You could understand the dip in form against Dallas and San Francisco, and even the road game against Seattle, but even with a couple of patsies on the back end, they couldn’t fix the problem. They missed five tackles in the Tampa playoff game, which amounted to 6.9%, so the number there was consistent with what they did at the end of the regular season.
It’s horrendous. Turrible!
