Notes and Quotes from Season-Ending Howie Roseman and Nick Sirianni Press Conference

Howie Roseman and Nick Sirianni spoke on Wednesday to cap off an Eagles season that started 10-1 but finished 11-6.
Apparently the thing got delayed because the pair were in a meeting, according to Martin Frank. Could have been the news of Vic Fangio and Miami parting ways that held things up.
When they did get this thing going, 31 minutes late at 3:01 p.m. –
- Roseman apologized for not doing this press conference sooner in the week.
- Nick Sirianni will miss Brian Johnson, can’t say enough good things about him. “It’s about coming up with fresh ideas and doing some things different, and that’s exactly where we are right now… Brian unfortunately is the one leaving at this particular time, but I can’t tell you how much I appreciate him as a coach.”
- Asked about changing the structure of the offense, Sirianni offered some cliches about putting players in the best positions to succeed, but he the next coordinator is going to bring “fresh ideas” while meshing some of the successful things they’ve done over the past three years. “To me, we got a little stale on offense by the end of year,” Sirianni said.
- Nick was also asked about whether or not the offense will continue to be his scheme. He replied by calling it “our scheme” and explained that they’re focused right now on getting the right guy in there.
- He suggested that the next coordinator will be calling the plays. That was part of the answer to the previous question and the comments was made in passing. He wasn’t asked directly about it.
- RE: defensive coordinator, Sirianni says “many different systems work… we’re looking for the guy who is the best at the job,” blah blah. They are going through the interview process right now.
- Will Sirianni’s role change? He talked about sitting in on various meetings, “building culture, making sure it’s working with our five core values, taking it one day at a time.”
- Roseman was asked about defensive personnel. He said nothing interesting. It’s their goal to build the best possible team and all of that. “I knew what was coming,” he said of a harder schedule and losing good players, while admitting that the offense was always going to further ahead of the defense (of course). He accepts responsibility for personnel shortcomings.
- Howie pushed back a little bit on the linebacker criticism. He’s a believer in Nakobe Dean. “It didn’t work out perfectly for him this year, but it doesn’t change the belief we have in the player.” Roseman also said that Zach Cunningham had a good year.
- Roseman said that Sirianni approached him about demoting Sean Desai. “That’s how we’re structured here. That’s how the relationship works.”
- Sirianni talked about the hindsight of giving Matt Patricia play calling duties. He made the decision because it was the best decision for the team. “I know I put Matt in a tough spot, I know I put Sean in a tough spot… there’s a lot of decisions I have to make like that.”
- Roseman noted recent success while stressing that nobody was okay with the way the season finished. It was a comment about not going overboard with knee jerk reaction.
- Sirianni talked in circles when asked a good question about Jalen Hurts’ familiarity with Brian Johnson, and how much the franchise QB’s existing relationship factored into considerations before Johnson’s dismissal. He was asked a follow up question on it (good question), but he deferred to media asking Hurts about it instead. “This is the worst part of the job, having to let people go, it doesn’t just affect the person you let go, it affects the families and there’s a friendship there, we’ve worked together every day for the past three years.”
- Sirianni called end-of-year meetings “business as usual” when he was asked about having to sell himself (basically a question of his job security and trying to learn about how those talks went). “But you better believe after that finish… I’m thinking I’m gonna them right again, we’re gonna re-prove ourselves, we have to prove it again.”
- Roseman chimed in about exit meetings – “we’re trying to accumulate information, but at the end of the day, these decisions are made by us, we understand everyone has different opinions… that’s not necessarily fair to Jalen (Hurts) as an example here, it’s important to understand that we accept responsibility, that’s on me and coach, we don’t ask the players to make these decisions, we don’t ask the people who work for us to make decisions.“
- Roseman was asked during the presser about Adam Schefter’s Vic Fangio report. Sirianni said they’ve “got a lot of good targets they’re working through.” Dodged the question obviously.*
- They are still working on staff evaluations. Some guys are “still up in the air.” He said they need to get coordinators in before they make decisions on staff like quality control, and the new coordinator needs to be able to bring in some of their people as well.
- The reporters all yelling over each other has to be annoying. You couldn’t pay me enough to do the Eagles beat. God bless all of them.
