Philadelphia Phillies Chase Rate Update: A Lot of Swinging and a Lot of Missing

Here’s your Philadelphia Phillies chase rate update for July 29th, 2025, a day removed from a hideous loss to the lousy Chicago White Sox:

29.4% is a season high. They were 23rd in Major League Baseball to begin the month and have dipped to 25th, albeit with very small margins separating the clump of teams in the bottom 10. Way back in April, they had the lowest chase rate in all of baseball, which has steadily increased in the three months since.
Talking raw totals, 2,358 is the most times chased among all MLB squads.
Of course, we look at the contact percentages for better detail, because it’s possible to swing and garbage and hit the garbage. In this case, the Phils are only making contact 53.9% of the time when they swing at pitches thrown out of the zone, which is 21st. It means the corresponding 46.1% whiff rate is 10th-highest in the league.
So yeah, it’s not amazing. A good snapshot of the season perhaps, considering the Phillies are battling for the division but haven’t inspired many fans along the way. This is a team that finished the 2024 regular season with a 30.3% chase rate, which was sixth-worst overall. They can’t stay away from the trash, collectively.
