I Stand With Tyrese Maxey in Having No Clue How to Use a Can Opener

Tyrese Maxey made some waves on the internet by outsourcing kitchen help to his Instagram followers. The Sixers star pleaded with those who joined his IG live on Monday morning to help explain how to use a can opener to get open some food for his dogs.
“Everybody over here trying to laugh, I’m being so serious,” Maxey said on his live. “Everybody’s gone. Myra’s gone, chef’s gone, my mom’s not here. I’m trying to open this can.”
He also went on the explain, “I lived in a house with my mama and my grandmama. What was I using a can opener for? … Academically, I’m extremely smart, like numbers and English and science. … I tell y’all, my mom was opening up cans for me.”
For what it is worth, Maxey was ultimately successful and managed to get the can open, which he jumped back on live to show off. The Kentucky product also blamed the tool itself, saying when once he switched to a newer can opener he had no trouble. He also showed off the meal he was prepping for his dogs, which looked far more appealing than most of my general diet (kibble excluded). –
But this brings the bigger question of why, in the year 2025, is there still a need for a can opener? We have self-driving cars, people that have been on the moon, and AI that can seemingly do anything you ask. Yet we rely on a medieval metal contraption just to get access to some basic soup or beans. Any sensible distribution company should at least be offering a pull tab or may even get crazy and introduce a twist off.
Putting aside the fact that I was resolved to stabbing open a can of pineapple juice just two weeks ago due to the unreliable (and self-admitted incompetence) nature of this advanced machinery, there simply has to be a better way. It also was less than reassuring to see the Sixers All-Star brandishing a knife himself in an effort to crack open the can.

Thankfully, we avoided what still would not have taken the cake for most bizarre injury a Sixers play has sustained in recent year. We should be thankful this is a non-issue, but getting injured opening a can still would not have compared to Kelly Oubre Jr.’s alleged biking accident, Andrew Bynum’s bowling fiasco, Markelle Fultz’s thoracic outlet syndrome, or Zaire Smith’s career being altered due to a food allergy.
Thank goodness it doesn’t take a can opener to put the ball in the basketball hoop.
Kinkead: agree with the can opener in 2025, everything should just have a pull tab now
