A Horse Named After Big Dom Won on Travers Stakes Day in Saratoga

Wearing the green silks, a horse named after Big Dom came from behind to win his debut race on Travers Stakes day in Saratoga over the weekend:
The horse’s owner is a friend of Donnie Jones and met Big Dom a couple years ago, promising him he’d name a colt after him if he ever got one.
This is from Ariel Simpson at the Inquirer:
(Greg) Tramontin, a Baton Rouge, La., native, was introduced to DiSandro through former Eagles punter Donnie Jones, a member of the 2017-18 Super Bowl team who is also from Baton Rouge. The two have become close friends over the years and often golf together. When Tramontin had to attend a board meeting in Philadelphia after selling his insurance company last summer, Jones joined him during the visit and they attended Eagles training camp.
“That night, [Jones] set up dinner with Big Dom at the Saloon,” Tramontin said. “We had a great evening, talked. He is a character and a half, he was fun. We got into Jason and Travis Kelce, Taylor Swift. He was like, ‘I have Taylor Swift on speed dial.’ I said, ‘No, you don’t.’ He showed me and I was like, ‘Well, I’ll be damned.’
“I said, ‘If I ever get a colt, I’m going to name it [after you].’ And this was prior to buying the horse, this was August of last year. So, I bought the horse and I was like, I’m going to name it Big Dom.”
What a meteoric rise from Big Dom over the last couple of years, huh? It’s not like he was exactly in the shadows. You’d see him walk out with Andy Reid, Chip Kelly, and Doug Pederson after games. He was in a Tostitos commercial with Chip. He didn’t just become an Italian security guard overnight. He’s been with the Eagles for over two decades. All it took was Dre Greenlaw sticking his finger in his face and a sideline ban and this guy has become a cult hero not only in Philly, but around the world. He’s got sandwiches around the city named after him, Trump is singling him out at the White House, and now he’s got a thoroughbred named after him. All this and he kind of still has this secrecy around him. Kind of crazy. How long until we get the biopic “loosely” based on him?
Big Dom is a solid name for a horse. If I’m reading the breeding charts correctly, it looks like he’s a descendant of Street Sense, a former Breeders Cup and Kentucky Derby champion, so he’s got a winner’s pedigree. I’ll be pulling for Big Dom as long as he’s racing and the next one is on October 4th in Keeneland which is a big boy race. We’ll see how good he really is then, but I’d kill to see him in the Derby next year.
