The Flyers, Who Have Been Historically Atrocious in Shootouts, Now Have the NHL’s Most Shootout Wins in the Last Two Seasons

The Flyers took out the Canadiens in a shootout on Tuesday night. They were up 3-0, then allowed four goals before nicking one back in the third period to go to overtime. Classic “glass half empty or half full” kind of thing, though they come home with needed points against a team that was 9-3 going into the game.

This was their third shootout win of the season, and they’re now perfect at 3-0, which is the most shootout wins in the NHL. Additionally:

  • they are scoring on 62.5% of shootout attempts, which is fourth-best
  • Flyers goaltenders have saved 66.7% of shootout shots faced, which is tied for 9th-best (also helps when a player loses the handle entirely, like last night)
  • combined with overtime, the Flyers are 4-1 in games going past the third period and their only loss was the 4-3 OT game in Carolina
  • they have an .800 winning percentage in OT + shootout games, which is 10th best in the league
  • since the start of 2024, they are 9-3 in shootouts and nine wins is the most in the NHL

For context, if you add up the last 10 years, the Flyers have scored on only 26.5% of shootout attempts, which is 29th of 32 teams. They have never finished with a single-season shootout percentage better than 35%. Their previous best number was 34.5% last season, which is a little more than one-third of shootout attempts finding the back of the net.

In comparison, the Stanley Cup champion Panthers were at 52.6% last year and went a perfect 6-0 in shootouts, so that’s the ceiling.

Certainly it helps having skill guys in the fold now. Trevor Zegras is 2-2 this year. Matvei Michkov is 2-3. Bobby Brink is 1-2 and Owen Tippett went 3-7 last year. That might not sound like an amazing number, his 42%, but for context, Jake Voracek was 31.3% in shootouts as a Flyers and Claude Giroux was 29.4% on 102 attempts. The only Flyer to attempt at least 25 shootouts and be above 35% career is current General Manager Danny Briere.

This is a good development.
