Lane Johnson is the New Jason Peters, and that’s Not an Insult, it’s a Stating of the Obvious
Lane Johnson is out 4-6 weeks with a Lisfranc injury that took him out of Sunday night’s win against the Detroit Lions.
If the timeline checks out, he could return for the Buffalo road trip or Washington season finale, depending on what the Birds’ record looks like. Ideally, he gets back to full health, the Commie game is meaningless in the standings, and they save Lane for the playoffs.
According to Pro Football Reference, Johnson has only played 450 snaps this season, which amounts to 73.9% of the offensive totals. He’s started all 10 games but had to come out of five of them:

Naturally, you probably saw some of the comments on social media. Lane Johnson is “the new Jason Peters,” or something along those lines, based on the frequency in which he’s had to exit games. His replacement, Fred Johnson, has played 181 snaps and is on pace for a career high if he starts and finishes these seven final games. It’s a good thing that Howie Roseman brought him back when he had the chance, because his services have been required, and he’s deputized well as the other Johnson playing tackle.
But the real question is whether or not the Jason Peters comparisons are fair to Lane Johnson. Some fans are finding this to be insulting, perhaps derogatory, but there’s nothing inherently negative in pointing out that Lane has had to come out of half of the games this season. He’s 35 years old, he’s been soldiering on since 2013, and his body has taken a beating in more than a decade of Eagles football. Think about how many run blocking snaps he got in 2024 en route to Saquon Barkley’s historic season. These guys got barely five months off before they were back in camp and preparing for a new season, and it’s no coincidence that three of the five O line starters have been banged up this year.
Looking at the data, the Johnson/Peters timelines do sync up. Jason only played seven games and 423 snaps during his age 35 season, which was the Super Bowl year. He returned for 16 games in his age 36 year, which was 2018, but only completed six of those games. The other ten times he played less than 100% of the snaps and had to leave with some sort of issue bothering him. It continued in 2019 and 2020, his last two Eagles season at age 37 and 38, when he played 21 games amounting to 1,380 snaps. In the final year, 2020, the Birds went 4-12 and had Matt Pryor filling in for 775 snaps at both guard and tackle. Peters and Johnson finished 6th and 7th in snaps for offensive linemen that year as they both dealt with injuries.
So it’s not exactly a hot take to expect a decline from Lane Johnson in his mid-30s. He can’t play forever. The Eagles got two Super Bowls and 6 Pro Bowls out of Lane since selecting him 4th overall in the 2013 draft and now they have to figure out who his long-term replacement is going to be. Lane is under contract in 2026 and 2027 and then Howie Roseman’s dummy years kick in, so the Eagles have two years to draft and develop their next right tackle before Johnson likely retired as one of the best Birds of all time.
