Dan Quinn Can’t Be Allowed to Talk Tough After Punting on 4th and 6 Near Midfield with Six Minutes Remaining in a Two-Score Game
Dan Quinn was asked about Saturday night’s brawl, and the Eagles’ decision to go for 2 while up big at the end of the game:
“I can only answer for my side, what I would do. Buy hey man, (if) that’s how they want to get down, all good. We’ll play them again in 2 weeks.”
The quote doesn’t seem too incendiary when you listen to the audio, but it’s funny because this feels silly with the pretext that Quinn punted on 4th and 6 from close to midfield with more than six minutes left in the game. His team was down 11 and he basically waved the white flag at that point.
Nick Sirianni was asked why he went for two to make it 29 to 10 instead of 28 to 10:
It’s an analytics explanation. Not sure there was much threat of a comeback, though. They pulled the starters after that touchdown, giving Washington four minutes against the Eagles backups to make up a 19-point deficit. The Commanders scored against the second team, went for two, and the game finished 29-18.
Two other things here:
Quinn had 4th and goal from the Eagles’ 2 early in the game and decided to kick a field goal. That was a conservative move considering the Commanders aren’t going to the playoffs and had nothing to lose. And then he talks about playing the Birds again in two weeks, but there’s a chance that game doesn’t mean anything and the Eagles sit their starters because they’re locked into the 3 seed. So then Washington is getting revenge on whom? Kelee Ringo? Tanner McKee?
