Eagles’ Title Run Back on After Vic Fangio Reportedly Decides to Not Retire, or So We Think
One of the worst-kept secrets of last week was that Eagles’ defensive coordinator Vic Fangio had been contemplating retirement. By Friday morning it got out of NovaCare and was being tweeted by anybody and everybody, amplified no doubt by Adam Schefter’s shiesty hinting on 97.5 the Fanatic, that another big piece of Eagles news would be coming down the pike.
The scribes then went official this weekend, Jimmy Kempski reporting this at Voice:
For now, Fangio is back, though it should be noted that PhillyVoice reached out to an Eagles spokesperson to confirm that Fangio is still the team’s defensive coordinator, and they declined to answer until further notice. As such, wiggle room exists for Fangio to change his mind again.
In the interim between Fangio’s short-lived retirement and his “for now” decision to return, a source said that the Eagles reached out to former Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon to gauge his interest in returning to the team should Fangio retire. Gannon had been fired as the Arizona Cardinals’ head coach earlier this offseason. He was ultimately hired by the Green Bay Packers to be their new defensive coordinator.
And then Mike Garafolo on top of that:
Sounds like Vic has been waffling for a bit. He’s 67 years old and has his ring so there’s not much more for him to accomplish in the NFL. It would be nice if he at least sees out this era of Eagles football and then when it goes to shit he retires, because the Birds need Fangio badly. It’s the only reason they weren’t an eight-win team this season. Getting Schwartz back would be solid, but Fangio’s defenses have been better than both Schwartz’s 2017 team and Gannon’s 2022 team. And those were good defenses.
Either way, let’s lock the man down. Do whatever it takes. Offer him all of the cash inside of the Brinks truck, and the truck itself. Offer him a bench coach job with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2027. We just need one more year. One more year! One more year!
