The Flyers Can Clinch on Monday Night by Beating a Team They’ve Lost to Eight Times in a Row
The pathetic Columbus Blue Jackets lost to the Boston Bruins on Sunday afternoon, stuck on 92 points now with one game left to play:
This means the Flyers’ magic number is two points. They need to win one of their two remaining games or get two loser points, which would put them into the postseason for the first time since the COVID 19 pandemic.
The quirk here is that Columbus plays Washington in the season finale. The Caps beat the Penguins again on Sunday and have won three in a row, so they’re on 93 points and hot on the Flyers’ trail. But they can only max out at 95 points and that’s why the Flyers remain in control of their destiny.
Not that the Flyers are going to stroll right in, and break their five-year playoff drought with ease, because they play Carolina on Monday night and have lost eight in a row against the Canes. The good thing is that in three previous matchups this year, they took a point from an OT or shootout loss, and Carolina ends the season on a road/road back-to-back, so they may rest some of their guys. We’ll find out soon enough. Philly has done better against Montreal this year, with a 4-1 road win and 5-4 shootout win on the road, so if they don’t clinch on Monday night, it won’t exactly be dread and despair on the second half of a home/home back-to-back to end the season.
LET’S GO FLYERS
They are so close.
