Don’t look now, but the Phillies have won 9 of 12.

They’re 35-30, and barring some miserable slide, they will remain above .500 for the remainder of the season.

And while Saturday was a dud with Andrew Painter on the mound, the Phils scored 20 runs in three games and have pushed their team OPS to a whopping .687! That’s still third-worst in Major League Baseball, but the nice thing about numbers is that they can be manipulated to tell the story you want to tell, so if we filter the data for June only, we get the following:

  • .278 batting average (5th)
  • .356 on-base percentage (4th)
  • .474 slug (5th)
  • .830 OPS (5th)
  • 11% walk rate (tied for 5th)
  • 9 stolen bases (tied for most in MLB)
  • 32 runs (tied for 11th)
  • 18 extra base hits (12th)
  • 30% chase rate (20th overall)

Good surface level stats in the six games against the Padres and White Sox at home. Team ERA has been excellent since Zack Wheeler returned, and Painter is the only problem spot in the rotation right now, assuming Aaron Nola continues to hold it together after two good starts.

The sample size is relatively small, yes, but the Phils beat up Anthony Kay on Friday night, who came into the game having not given up more than two earned runs since April. They tagged David Sandlin and Tyler Davis for three earned runs each on Sunday. Sometimes you see the ball come off the bat and you gain a bit of confidence and things begin rolling from there.

Up next for the Phillies is Toronto, Milwaukee, Miami, then Mets/Nats/Mets. That goes until June 28th. Milwaukee has a top three starting pitcher team ERA at 3.22, but Toronto is sitting there at 4.11, which is 13th in MLB. Then Miami’s starting pitchers have the 26th-worst ERA and Washington is 21st. The Mets are bang-average in this category, and sitting 14th in the league.

So there are going to be plenty of opportunities to get the bats going over the next six June series. It’s the only thing holding the Phils back right now. The pitching has been good. The fielding has been good. Don Mattingly is in place. These guys get hot at the plate, and WATCH OUT.
