Yep, Football Is Bad For Your Head

It should be interesting to see how Roger Goodell spins this one.

The New York Times came out with a mind-bending INTERACTIVE GRAPHIC detailing the findings of a study published to the American Medical Association yesterday, which found that 110 out of the 111 NFL brains it tested showed signs of CTE. From the New York Times:

Dr. Ann McKee, a neuropathologist, has examined the brains of 202 deceased football players. A broad survey of her findings was published on Tuesday in The Journal of the American Medical Association.

Of the 202 players, 111 of them played in the N.F.L. — and 110 of those were found to have chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or C.T.E., the degenerative disease believed to be caused by repeated blows to the head.

C.T.E. causes myriad symptoms, including memory loss, confusion, depression and dementia. The problems can arise years after the blows to the head have stopped.

Weeeeeeeeeee. That sound you hear is the NFL brain trust (sorry) convening a meeting to discredit Dr. McKee – What’s that? She once donated money to the DNC? FAKE NEWS! (I may be confusing my disinformation campaigns) – and call her study into question.

Now, to be fair, her study was based on brains donated by families who feared their loved ones had shown signs of CTE, so most researchers would tell you not to draw any conclusions from this. [Imagine being the family of the guy who did not have CTE?] Most of the brains were those of linemen, but that can also be partly due to the fact that there’s literally just more of them.

Anyway, good read.

Side note: The way the NY Times writes NFL makes me angry.
