Hockey fans had been deprived of NHL action for a couple of days and, for many, the World Junior Championship was a reason for optimism. The Flyers have seven players in the tournament including:

Morgan Frost – Forward – Canada

Adam Ginning – Defenseman – Sweden

Samuel Ersson – Goalie – Sweden

Joel Farabee – Forward – USA

Noah Cates – Forward – USA

Jay O’Brien – Forward – USA

Jack St. Ivany – Forward – USA

Morgan Frost ended up being the headliner for fans of the Orange & Black on Wednesday night. The 19-year-old, making his debut for the Canadian National Team, registered a hat trick and two primary assists as part of Canada’s 14-0 annihilation of Denmark. None of this is entirely surprising. In 32 games for Sault St. Marie Greyhounds, Frost has put up 58 points (20 goals/38 assists) for an average of 1.81 points per game. Frost – who I’ve been told has the playmaking abilities and vision of a young Claude Giroux at the OHL level – put some masterful stickwork on display in each of his scoring plays. He was a catalyst for Canada and figured into four of his team’s first five goals.

Look at this gorgeous first goal:

Here’s his first assist of the game to Owen Tippett:

His second goal was placed perfectly just inside the pipe:

Frost’s hat trick put Team Canada up 5-0:

In a less-flashy effort, Samuel Ersson posted 29 saves on 30 shots faced in a 2-1 win for Team Sweden over Team Finland.
