Doug Pederson Says Kirk Cousins Comments Had Nothing to do With Zach Brown’s Release

Kevin Kinkead - October 16, 2019

Zach Brown is no longer an Eagle. It was a brief tenure in Philadelphia.

Was he axed because of the pregame comments he made about Kirk Cousins? No, according to head coach Doug Pederson, who said this today:

As you guys know, we always do what we feel is in the best interest of the football team. I appreciate everything Zach did for us. I think Jim (Schwartz) alluded to the fact that we need a little more production out of that group. So we made the change.

Obviously we’re based on performance. I’m not gonna get into a lot of ‘whys,’ as to why we did it. We need more production there so we made the change.

Here’s what the defensive coordinator said about the Brown move on Tuesday afternoon:

Mike Groh Answers Questions About the Eagles’ Receiving Corps, Which Has Underwhelmed

Kevin Kinkead - October 16, 2019

Mike Groh’s Tuesday press conference was highlighted by questions about the Eagle receivers, who haven’t exactly been lighting the world on fire in DeSean Jackson’s absence.

As a precursor, or a refresher of sorts, here’s what the Birds are doing in the pass catching game through six weeks of play:

Not amazing. You’ve got your tight end leading the pack with 366 yards (just 61 per game), then it’s a slot receiver, rookie running back, veteran possession guy, and injured speed burner. Mack Hollins and JJ Arcega-Whiteside have been non-factors, while Dallas Goedert’s numbers feel disappointing as well.

Groh was first asked a series of questions about JJAW, which went like this:

Jalen Ramsey is Now a Los Angeles Ram

Kevin Kinkead - October 15, 2019

Somebody did it. They offered the Jaguars the pair of first round draft picks they were looking for:

Confirmed by Ian Rapoport and others.

Gut reaction? Two firsts and a fourth is a pretty steep price to pay. That does not feel like a Howie Roseman type of deal and I’d be shocked if he ever made an offer like that. But the truth is that your first round pick in 2020 or 2021 ain’t gonna be as good as Jalen Ramsey, right? Sometimes you just gotta #DoTheDeal. You gotta give up big assets to get big players.

Denver’s Chris Harris looks like the next best target out there if the Eagles make their typical midseason move (Golden Tate last year, Jay Ajayi in 2017).

Youth Football Coach Could be Fined for Scoring Too Many Points

Kevin Kinkead - October 15, 2019

Ridiculous story!

Ed Rendell would say we’re becoming a “nation of wusses,” and he’s probably right. The gist of this nonsense is that a local youth football coach could be facing a $500 fine because his team scored too many points in a game. And the plot twist is that the coach in question is Torrey Smith’s brother-in-law.

Do Younger Eagles Fans Share Our Distaste for the Dallas Cowboys?

Kevin Kinkead - October 15, 2019

Younger Eagles fans just don’t seem to hate the Dallas Cowboys these days, do they? Perhaps some do, but it’s not the utter disdain and abhorrence that used to be prevalent here.

Dallas week comes around every year, and you get the sense that Jerry Jones’ hideous franchise just does not garner the collective repulsion that used to waft over the Delaware Valley, like a stinky cloud of annoyance. Millennials seem to view the Cowboys as just another team instead of the loathsome evil empire that they once were.

The reason seems pretty obvious. Dallas has been shit for many years now. They haven’t won a Super Bowl since 1996 and they’ve compiled a 4-10 playoff record since, a time period that saw a feared former juggernaut become a perennial disappointment.

So if you’re like me, age 35 or older, you remember when the Cowboys were really damn good. You remember when Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, and Michael Irvin were chewing up the NFL and spitting it out. Dallas was “America’s Team,” picked up by people who lived in places like bumblefuck Idaho simply because they were good and they were on TV. Bandwagon jumpers chose the Cowboys as their team despite having no geographic or cultural connection to the franchise.

The Cowboys Don’t Seem Interested in Bulletin Board Material

Kevin Kinkead - October 15, 2019

Monday, Doug Pederson basically guaranteed a week seven win in Dallas, then came back a few hours later and said he was not actually guaranteeing a win.

We can split hairs over the verbiage, which seems like a feckless exercise since the real takeaway is whether anything the head ball coach said yesterday actually resonated in the Big D.

The Cowboys didn’t seem to be bothered by the comments, at least not in a way that manifested itself publicly. They’ve lost three straight games and have enough to worry about without taking an opposing coach’s thoughts into consideration.

Said Michael Gallup, via USA Today:

NFL Refs Had Another Shocker on Monday Night

Kevin Kinkead - October 15, 2019

Good game last night between the Lions and Packers, assuming you could get through the commercials, delays, penalty flags, and incorrect calls.

NFL refs had a howler last night, calling two “illegal use of the hands” penalties on Trey Flowers, both on third down, and both in the fourth quarter.

Here’s one, which was not hands to the face at all:
